Iowa Woman Expresses Gratitude for Survival Following Confinement Under House

GREENFIELD, Iowa — On the fateful day ⁣of May 21, Cheryl Ringer found herself⁤ in⁣ the terrifying grip of⁢ the deadly Greenfield tornado. She sought refuge in her basement, the safest place in her home, as the tornado wreaked havoc above. Once the storm had subsided, she⁤ was trapped amidst the wreckage of her home, with only a few slivers of ​daylight piercing through the debris.

“I realized I was unable to move my legs‍ as they were pinned down by cinder blocks,” Ringer recounted.

Her home now lies in ruins. The remnants of her life are heaped in ‍a pit​ that was once her home’s foundation — her sanctuary. Despite being buried under the rubble, she managed to raise her hand ‌and signal for help from⁢ a neighbor.

Her son, Daniel Ringer, who resides just a⁢ few blocks away, ⁢also suffered the⁣ loss of his home.

“I was overwhelmed with thoughts of how to reach⁣ her and what actions I should take,” he expressed.

Upon witnessing the devastation of his mother’s home, ‍he was at a loss as to how the rescue team would manage‌ to extract her.

“As⁢ soon as ⁣I arrived, ⁣I saw a ​rescue team and immediately alerted them about my mother being trapped in the basement. I attempted to start digging ⁢her out, but‌ they stopped me,⁣ warning that my actions could potentially cause a cave-in,”​ Daniel Ringer explained.

Ringer’s insurance company has temporarily⁤ relocated her to a former nursing home, now repurposed as an apartment building, located a few miles west of ‌Greenfield in Fontanelle.

However, she views this as a temporary setback and is optimistic about returning to her home.

“Greenfield is an‍ exceptional town ‍to raise a family,​ and I‍ am hopeful that it ‍will demonstrate its ⁢resilience and bounce back stronger than ever,” Cheryl Ringer expressed ​with conviction.
