SCHENECTADY — A significant architectural landmark in the heart of Schenectady is about to undergo a major transformation.
The historic Alexandra Apartment Hotel building, located at 3 State St., is slated for a comprehensive renovation by J&J Apartments LLC. This local development team consists of Joe Johnson and Jeff McDonald, who run an electrical contracting business in Troy and a general contracting company in Niskayuna, respectively.
The four-story edifice, situated at the intersection of State and Washington streets opposite SUNY Schenectady, will see façade enhancements and a total revamp of the 12,000-square-foot interior to accommodate 17 market-rate apartments.
Constructed in 1900, the Queen Anne-style hotel was initially marketed to General Electric employees and boasted a full-time staff and dining service. The building later transitioned into a conventional apartment building.
In recent times, however, the structure has remained unoccupied. The building earned a spot on the state and national registers of historic places in 2019.
According to the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, which endorsed the historic designation, “The building is linked with Schenectady’s growth and is significant as an apartment hotel building type.”
Renovation work on the building has already commenced following approval from the Schenectady Planning Commission earlier this year.
The Schenectady County Metroplex Development Authority will contribute a $25,000 façade grant towards the project and provide a sales tax exemption for building supplies.
Ray Gillen, chair of the development authority’s board of directors, highlighted during its meeting Wednesday that the building is one of the first structures seen when entering the Electric City from the neighboring village of Scotia and exiting from Interstate 890 at Exit 4C.
“It’s a very prominent building,” he remarked.
The renovation of 3 State St. coincides with ongoing redevelopment work on the historic Wedgeway Building at 271-277 State St. and plans to refurbish a trio of buildings at Erie Boulevard and State Street continue to advance through the planning process.
Additional Projects
The Metroplex board also approved a project to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the traffic circle on Erie Boulevard at the entrance of Mohawk Harbor. The plans include creating more green space in the center of the circle and installing a metal sculpture crafted by Armando & Sons Welders and designed by LAndArt Studios — both based in Schenectady.
The $72,000 project is backed by a $10,000 donation from Rivers Casino & Resort and a $9,000 contribution from Roberta Blackmer in memory of her late husband.
Metroplex intends to use funds from the city’s Downtown Revitalization Project to cover the remaining cost of the upgrades.
The board also greenlit the sale of a 0.02-acre parcel on Van Guysling Avenue in Schenectady to Highbridge Development for $17,500.
Highbridge owns an adjacent 0.07-acre lot. The sale will facilitate expanded parking for Highbridge’s tenants along the Broadway corridor, which includes Upstate Dermatology and the state lottery headquarters.
