NEW YORK — Can you recall the things you searched for in 2024? Well, Google certainly does.
On Tuesday, Google unveiled its annual “Year in Search” report, providing a comprehensive overview of the most popular search queries entered into its search engine in 2024. The report highlights the terms that experienced the most significant surge in traffic compared to the previous year. These include everything from major news events, such as global elections, to the most sought-after songs, athletes, and unforgettable pop-culture moments that captured the attention of people around the globe.
Interestingly, sports — with a particular emphasis on soccer and cricket — took the lead in Google’s overall trending searches in 2024. The Copa América was the most searched event globally, followed closely by the UEFA European Championship and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
On the other hand, the U.S. election was the most searched news-specific topic worldwide. Other popular queries included concerns about excessive heat and the much-anticipated Olympic Games.
In the people category, President-elect Donald Trump was the most searched personality on Google this year. He was followed by Catherine, Princess of Wales, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, and Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who also topped the athlete-specific searches. In the category of notable individuals who passed away in 2024, the late singer Liam Payne, country singer Toby Keith, and O.J. Simpson were the most searched.
When it comes to entertainment, Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” was the most searched movie of the year, while Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer” led the TV show trends. Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” was the most searched song.
But that’s not all. The Olympic village’s chocolate muffin, made famous by Norwegian swimmer Henrik Christiansen during the summer games, was the most searched recipe on Google this year. The New York Times’ “Connections” puzzle was the most searched game. And in the U.S., many people turned to Google to understand online trends like the word “demure” and “mob wife aesthetic.”
For more country-specific lists and trends from previous years, you can visit Google’s “Year in Search” data available online. The tech giant from California has gathered 2024 search results from Jan. 1 through Nov. 23 of this year.
Google is not alone in publishing an annual recap or top trends as we bid farewell to 2024. Other platforms like Spotify Wrapped, as well as Collins Dictionary and Merriam-Webster’s words of the year, have also provided insightful reflections for 2024.
