On Friday afternoon, the Haldane football team faced off against Stillwater in the NYSPHSAA East Region Class D semifinals and it was an intense showdown. The Blue Devils made a huge effort to catch up to Stillwater’s lead, but with just 14 seconds left, it seemed as though their hopes were dashed. However, instead of giving up, the Section 1 champions made a bold decision to go for the win on a 2-point try. Although the pass attempt on the swinging gate trick play fell incomplete, it was an admirable effort from Haldane. Despite their loss, the team showed great determination and courage, and this only adds to their already impressive record. Stillwater’s Jaxon Mueller credited his teammate James Cocozzo for making a huge play, showing that players need to step up and deliver in these crucial moments. The team’s head coach Ian Godfrey also gave credit to his coaching staff and players for having the awareness and composure to handle such a tense situation. Though Haldane may not have come out on top, both teams put on a great performance and Stillwater’s victory will go down in school history. It was an unforgettable game that highlights the true spirit of sportsmanship and determination.
