Erika Poje of Guilderland Center Overcomes Lyme Disease to Excel in Bowling

spot_img
spot_img

Bowling is a game of constant adjustments, but Erika Poje wasn’t expecting the kind of dramatic changes she was forced to make recently in order to remain a scratch bowler.

Poje, a Brooklyn native who spent the majority of her life in the Capital Region, has produced averages of at least 200 in her primary major league in 18 of her last 20 seasons, with highs of 220 in the Newkirk Keglers league at Town ’N Country in 2015-16 and a 217 in the DV Greco Insurance Women’s Doubles (now the Towne Mixed Doubles) back in the 2010-2011 campaign

But the 53-year-old Guilderland Center resident was diagnosed with Lyme disease last year, and it took a heavy toll on her quality of life, including her favorite hobby.

“I wasn’t even sure I’d be back to bowling. I couldn’t even hold an 8-pound ball, let alone swing it,” Poje said. “For me, I suffered pretty severely. It took a very long time before it was diagnosed. They first told me it was arthritis because I tested negative for Lyme disease. But I started to get severe back pain to the point where I couldn’t sit or sleep. My doctors ran a bunch more tests. They thought I had sciatica, but then I also developed Bell’s palsy. After six weeks, I tested positive for Lyme disease.”

Poje, a longtime senior specialist for credit card fraud at Key Bank, refused to let her new physical challenges of pain and fatigue prevent her from competing in her favorite hobby.

“Everyone is affected by Lyme disease in different ways. I became educated on it. There was one doctor I knew that had the disease for 10 years before he was even diagnosed,” Poje noted. “So when I did some research, I started to go to [physical therapy], and I got myself stronger. It made me feel better. I can’t do as many moves on the lanes now, though. I don’t like to move as much, because I really can’t. I can’t throw as big of a hook anymore, so I’ve learned more about the game and how my bowling balls react.

“I think the best part of my game now is my ability to read what my ball does on the lanes. I never learned that part of bowling before. I educated myself more and asked for help to figure out why I don’t carry.”

Poje, who uses DV8 and Brunswick equipment, still suffers with arthritis in her knees and back from the Lyme disease, but she says she makes sure to stretch a lot and take a hot shower to loosen up before her matches.

“I’m a lot stiffer, so I have to make sure I’m prepared physically to bowl,” she explained.

She’s currently competing in the Towne Mixed Doubles league and the Cosmopolitan Mixed league Monday nights at Sportsman’s Bowl.

Poje moved to the Capital Region from Brooklyn when she was 9 years old and started bowling when she was 13.

“My mother’s boyfriend taught me how to bowl, and I loved it right from the start,” she said. “I was running indoor track at the time, and I quit because that season it ran at the same time as my bowling season.”

Poje, a Columbia High School grad who studied criminal justice at Hudson Valley Community College, owns six perfect games and a high triple of 797.

“One of my biggest goals is to get that first 800 triple. I also love to bowl in tournaments. I bowl in every tournament I know of. The only tournament I’ve won so far was the Turkey Shoot at Town ’N Country Lanes, but I’ve finished second or third in a lot of other tournaments,” said a busy Poje, who also works about 20 hours a week at Hannaford.

LAST-MINUTE GIFTS

Now is the time to get those last-minute Christmas gifts for the bowlers in your lives.

No. 1 on everyone’s list is a new bowling ball. I polled the three Schenectady USBC center pro shops to see what the hottest orbs are.

Bob Tedesco at Sportsman’s Bowl’s Bob’s Pro Shop says his top-five sellers are the Storm IQ Ruby Red, the Storm Virtual Energy, the Hammer Envy Tour Pearl, the Roto Grip TNT Infused and the Global Eternity.

Matt Fazzone of Action Bowling Supply at Towne Bowling Academy indicates his top five are the Roto Grip TNT Infused, the Storm Journey, the Storm Phaze 2, the 900 Global Eternity Pi and the 900 Global Zen Gold Label.

Brian LeClair of Revolutions Pro Shop at Boulevard Bowl (and Del Lanes) said his top sellers are the Roto Grip Magic Gems and the Storm Journeys, which are very popular among the high-end scratch bowlers. For beginners and kids, the Tropical Surges balls are in demand.

Don’t forget other bowling supplies when you’re making your final gift runs. New bowling shoes, bowling ball cleaners, towels, single- and multiple-ball carry bags or rollers, wrist supports and small auxiliary bags for tape, scissors, rosin bags, and emergency items are also good ideas.
