SCHENECTADY — The Schenectady Board of Education is facing the departure of Superintendent Anibal Soler Jr., who will be taking on the same role with Yonkers Public Schools in May. The board is now considering an in-house succession plan to fill the vacancy left by Soler’s resignation.
Soler recently accepted a five-year contract with the Yonkers district, prompting the Schenectady school board to pass a resolution accepting his resignation effective April 30. The board is committed to working with Soler to develop a strong succession plan that will ensure a smooth transition for the district.
Board of Education President Bernice Rivera emphasized the importance of collaboration with Soler in crafting the succession plan, stating, “With our dedicated team and community, we’ll continue to move our district forward.”
As the board begins the process of finding a replacement for Soler, Rivera mentioned that they will seek Soler’s input on the superintendent search. She also indicated that the board is considering both internal and external candidates for the position.
While the timeline for selecting a new superintendent is still to be determined, the board is prepared to make a decision based on careful deliberation and thoughtfulness. In the meantime, the possibility of appointing an interim superintendent is being considered if a replacement for Soler is not selected in time for his departure.
During a special meeting, the Yonkers Board of Education voted 8-0 to confirm Soler’s appointment, highlighting the significance of his new role. Rivera praised Soler’s tenure with Schenectady, expressing confidence in the district’s resilience and ability to move forward.
With the departure of Superintendent Soler, the Schenectady Board of Education is entering a new chapter, and the board is dedicated to ensuring a smooth transition and continued progress for the district.
Agree They should prioritize a candidate with a strong background in education and a proven track record of effective leadership.
