CLIFTON PARK — The NYSPHSAA Class B subregional contest at Shenendehowa on Tuesday night was dominated by Stillwater, as they faced off against Northeastern Clinton.
Stillwater set the tone early, scoring an impressive 34 points in the first quarter and establishing a commanding 40-3 lead against the Section 7 representative.
They ultimately secured a 71-24 victory, advancing to the regional championship round of the state playoffs this coming Saturday.
“This team has put in the effort,” expressed Stillwater coach Bruce Lilac. “They were disappointed with last year’s sectional final loss, feeling they had the potential to be state finalists. We often remind them of that, and they understand what it takes to succeed.”
Eight players contributed to Stillwater’s scoring, with Jaxon Mueller leading the pack with 17 points. Kaelan Leak and Carter Wichelns each added 15 points, while Lukas Lilac contributed 13.
“I didn’t anticipate such a significant lead,” admitted Wichelns. “Our focus is on executing our plays to the best of our ability.”
“I am confident that if we apply what we learn in practice, we will perform well,” he added. “The offense will follow.”
With this victory, Stillwater’s record improves to 24-1. They will face Section 10’s Canton (21-3 overall) on Saturday at 2:45 p.m. at SUNY Potsdam.
For Coach Lilac, Tuesday’s game was a chance to see every player contribute in a significant match.
“It’s always rewarding,” Lilac said. “There’s no real benefit in scoring 100 points against a team. We did it once and I wasn’t pleased. It’s important that all players, regardless of their role, get a chance to participate in the game as they all put in the hard work during practice.”
