LOCKPORT, NY — The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) made a public call for more volunteer firefighters across the state on Tuesday. This announcement was made during the launch of the RecruitNY campaign at the South Lockport Fire Company.
In a bid to encourage more recruits, FASNY President Ed Tase Jr, revealed a proposal currently in the New York State budget. This proposal aims to boost the income tax credit for firefighters from a modest $200 to a more substantial $800.
“This benefit will reach every volunteer firefighter — regardless of whether you own property, rent, or live with your parents. Once you file an income tax return, you will receive $800 for your service in the volunteer fire service,” Tase Jr. explained.
FASNY has reported a worrying decline in the number of volunteer firefighters statewide. The figures have dropped from 110,000 in 1998 to just 75,000 in 2021, representing a 32% decrease in membership.
In response to this decline, Governor Kathy Hochul initiated a program last month that offers payment to new volunteers for their firefighter training.

“Those who value their volunteer fire service should reach out to their local Assemblyman to make their voices heard. We need to do everything we can to keep the volunteer fire service strong,” urged Tase Jr. “The volunteer fire service is more than just firefighting. We are a community service-oriented organization and we need all the help we can get.”
Despite the challenges, firefighters affirm that serving the community is worth every minute of their time.
“It’s a passion. It’s exhilarating, it’s an adrenaline rush, and it’s the satisfaction that comes from helping the community. The first time you help save a life, you’re hooked,” shared Christopher Mcclune, PIO of South Lockport Fire Co.
