SCHENECTADY — Ellis Medicine is set to begin the demolition of its Nott Street parking garage in July. In preparation for this, the hospital will host a community forum on Tuesday evening to discuss its plans for a new garage and to gather feedback from local residents.
In April, Ellis received the green light from the Schenectady Planning Commission to construct a new six-story garage at the same location. This is a revised version of a $30 million garage proposal that the hospital had previously received approval for in 2022.
The initial project was put on hold as Ellis was in the process of securing funding.
With the existing garage nearing the end of its useful life, the hospital’s plan is to tear down the structure during the summer months and replace the 250-space garage with a surface lot that can accommodate 210 vehicles.
While the hospital continues to raise funds for the new garage project, the surface lot will serve as a temporary solution. The new garage project will initially feature a two-bay garage with capacity for 871 parking spaces, with the potential to expand to three bays and 1,201 parking spaces in the future.
The hospital will be seeking public opinion on its project during a meeting at the Graham Auditorium in the hospital from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
“We welcome all interested neighbors to join us and share their thoughts on the project,” said Ellis Director of Communications Philip Schwartz on Thursday. “We also want to ensure our patients are aware of the upcoming changes in parking arrangements, as we will be directing patients and visitors to our Rosa Road garage. Our main goal is to continue providing safe and convenient access to care, and parking is a crucial part of that.”
Ellis Medicine has announced that the current four-story garage at 1101 Nott St. will cease operations on May 31 after 46 years of service, with site work commencing three days later.
The demolition is scheduled to start on July 1, coinciding with the summer break for students at the nearby Oneida Middle School.
In the meantime, the new surface lot is expected to be operational, with Ellis directing visitors primarily to the hospital’s 345-space Rosa Road garage while the demolition and construction work is underway.
