TEL AVIV, Israel — In a recent development, Israel’s military has confirmed the recovery of three more bodies of hostages who were killed on Oct. 7, 2023, from Gaza. This news comes as the International Court of Justice, the highest judicial body of the United Nations, is set to make a ruling on whether Israel should cease its military operations and withdraw from the region.
The deceased hostages, identified as Hanan Yablonka, Michel Nisenbaum, and Orion Hernandez Radoux, were reportedly killed on the day of the attack at the Mefalsim intersection. Their bodies were subsequently taken to Gaza. The families of the victims have been informed of this tragic development.
This announcement follows the discovery of the bodies of three other Israeli hostages, also killed on Oct. 7, which was reported less than a week ago.
The Oct. 7 attack, led by Hamas militants, resulted in the death of approximately 1,200 individuals, primarily civilians, and the abduction of around 250 others. Since then, about half of the hostages have been released, mostly in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel during a weeklong cease-fire in November.
According to Israeli sources, around 100 hostages remain captive in Gaza, along with the bodies of at least 39 more. So far, 17 bodies of hostages have been recovered.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to eradicate Hamas and secure the return of all hostages. However, his efforts have seen limited success, leading to calls for his resignation and threats from the U.S. to reduce its support due to the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Netanyahu reiterated on Friday that Israel has a responsibility to do everything in its power to bring back those who were abducted, whether they are alive or deceased.
French President Emmanuel Macron, in a post on social media platform X on Friday, expressed his condolences to the family of Hernandez Radoux, a French-Mexican citizen. He reaffirmed France’s commitment to the release of the hostages.
Meanwhile, the International Court of Justice is expected to rule on an urgent plea by South Africa to order Israel to halt its operations. While Israel is unlikely to comply, such an order would increase international pressure on the increasingly isolated nation.
Opinions in Israel are divided over the hostage situation. Some believe the government should pause the war and prioritize freeing the hostages, while others view the hostage situation as an unfortunate consequence of the mission to eliminate Hamas. Negotiations mediated by Qatar, the United States, and Egypt have so far yielded little progress.
Public dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the hostage crisis is growing. Earlier this week, a group representing the families of hostages released new video footage showing Hamas’ capture of five female Israeli soldiers near the Gaza border on Oct. 7.
The disturbing footage shows several of the young soldiers injured and in distress. The video has sparked nationwide protests demanding the release of the hostages.
According to the military, the bodies of the hostages were discovered during an operation in Jabaliya. Military spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari revealed in a news conference that the bodies were retrieved based on “critical intelligence” uncovered last week by Israeli forces operating in Gaza.
The group representing the families of the hostages confirmed that the bodies have been returned to their families for burial.
Nisenbaum, a 59-year-old Brazilian-Israeli from the southern city of Sderot, was taken hostage while attempting to rescue his 4-year-old granddaughter. Hernandez Radoux, 30, was abducted from the Nova music festival, which he attended with his partner Shani Louk, whose body was found by the army nearly a week ago. Yablonka, a 42-year-old father of two, was also taken from the music festival. His family had no news of him for nearly two months after he’d been taken, not knowing if he was alive or dead.
Since the war began, Israel’s offensive has resulted in the death of more than 35,000 Palestinians, as reported by Gaza’s Health Ministry, leading to a humanitarian crisis and near-famine conditions.
Despite weakening Hamas’ capabilities after nearly eight months of war, militants are regrouping in some of the hardest-hit areas in northern Gaza and resuming rocket attacks into nearby Israeli communities. Israel reports that its troops are operating in Rafah in the south, in central Gaza, and in Jabaliya in the north.
I agree with this news.
Disagree – This is truly heartbreaking news.
