Writing has a way of bringing clarity to our thoughts, and this is no different for artists.
Schenectady-based artists and educators, Laini Nemett and Walter Hatke, found their artistic perspectives evolving through a series of email exchanges. These discussions, which began in 2015, led them from a focus on interior geometries to a fascination with exterior spaces.
This shift in perspective culminated in a vibrant and engaging exhibition, which opened in April and will run until Sept. 30 at the Kelly Adirondack Center.
The dialogue between the two artists began when Nemett assumed the role of professor of painting and drawing at Union College, succeeding Hatke who had held the position for 30 years. Through sharing images of their ongoing work, they discovered a shared interest in the interplay between natural and man-made architecture.
For Hatke, this exhibition represents a return to his roots. His artistic journey began with landscapes, transitioned to interiors and still lifes, and has now come full circle back to the natural world. His work is featured in prestigious collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Academy Museum (NYC), the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Art, among others. As a Union College professor emeritus, Hatke taught painting, drawing, and biological illustration.
“A few years back, I began a series of small oil paintings featuring sites along the Mohawk/Hudson Bikeway, a route I frequently travel,” Hatke shared in an artist’s statement.
One of his pieces features a cluster of trees, painted with richly textured brushstrokes, framing a few humble homes.
In a new series, debuting at this exhibition, Hatke brings viewers closer to the architecture. Drawing inspiration from the Blenheim Covered Bridge in Schoharie County, these large-scale paintings highlight the intricate architecture of the bridge.
The bridge, originally built in 1854, was destroyed in the Schoharie Creek flood of 2011 and later reconstructed using detailed drawings of the interior structures made through the Works Progress Administration.
The series showcases beams intersecting and overlapping in a mesmerizing network of lines. The Kelly Adirondack Center, with its gallery space featuring dark wood beams across the ceiling, provides the perfect backdrop for this series.
Adjacent to one of the “Bridge” pieces is a captivating polyptych from Nemett, depicting scenes from a Schenectady neighborhood. Titled “Sheltered Together,” the works exude a warm, nostalgic glow.
These pieces are part of a series Nemett began during the pandemic.
“When the campus closed, I moved my studio and classroom into the front room of our house. I spent a lot of time looking out the window at the houses across the street,” Nemett explained.
She found herself drawn to the subtle changes in the yellow and white houses across the street as the light and shadows shifted throughout the day and across seasons. She also formed a connection with one of the homeowners, a fellow artist who was also working from a home studio.
“The paintings became my way of connecting with the outside world during the lockdown,” Nemett shared.
This marked the beginning of Nemett’s plein air-style paintings. A graduate of Brown University and the Hoffberger School of Painting, Nemett has held residencies at Yaddo and the Joan Mitchell Center, and received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Queens Council on the Arts, and Fulbright.
Nemett has continued to paint plein air since starting that series in 2020, but the scenery has changed as she’s since moved to a home surrounded by trees in an old-growth forest. These new neighbors are featured in other paintings throughout the exhibition, their branches sometimes holding sparkling snow or vibrantly colored leaves.
The brush strokes are loose and layered, with compositions that bring the viewer directly into the tangle of branches, evoking the crisp scent of fall or the chill of winter.
Hatke’s works are equally immersive, though the perspective is perhaps reversed from Nemett’s. His compositions tend to place the viewer on the outside of homes, all of which are framed by the surrounding greenery.
In one of the standout works, titled “Writer’s Room,” a stark white home is depicted in a nearly photorealistic style. With the home surrounded by greenery, the eye is drawn to a large bay window on the second floor, its curtains open.
The piece is based on the back of the house in Concord, Massachusetts, where Ralph Waldon Emerson wrote in a room that overlooked his family’s garden.
“Two Painters” is sure to resonate not only with fellow artists but also with local conservationists. For those who haven’t done so already, it’s a good excuse to check out the Kelly Adirondack Center, which is the former Niskayuna home of conservationist Paul Schaefer. It houses the Adirondack Research Library, including rare books, maps, photographs and other documents covering the Adirondack Park and the New York State Forest Preserve. It’s open from Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
