SCHENECTADY - Whether you prefer them fried, scalloped or baked, the much-loved Tater Trot is making a comeback in Schenectady on Saturday, July 13.
Organized by the Downtown Schenectady Improvement Corporation, the event follows the successful format of the Wing Walk and the Soup Stroll. City restaurants will be showcasing their best potato-based recipes for just $1 a sample. Attendees will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite dish.
“Whether you’re using russets, reds or sweet potatoes, and whether you’re serving them scalloped, mashed, fried, as potato salad, potato soup or latkes, the only requirement is that the dish is primarily potato-based. We’ve seen a fantastic range of diverse recipes in the past,” said Maureen Neufeld, the executive director of the DSIC.
The inaugural Tater Trot took place last May, with 22 restaurants participating. The event was a huge success, attracting several thousand attendees, far exceeding the expected 1,000. Simone’s Kitchen was the proud winner of the first event.
“The turnout was impressive for a first-year event,” Neufeld said.
The biggest challenge in organizing the event this year was finding a suitable date. Originally, it was set to return on May 18, but due to a number of other events taking place downtown on the same weekend, the DSIC decided to reschedule. The new date is just after the Schenectady County SummerNight, which is scheduled for Friday, July 12.
“The biggest challenge is also our biggest blessing. Downtown Schenectady is always buzzing with activity. It’s a wonderful problem to have, but it does make scheduling events a bit tricky,” Neufeld said.
The list of participating restaurants is yet to be finalized, but the DSIC will be announcing some of the participants on social media in the coming weeks. The Tater Trot will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more details, check out the event page on Facebook or visit downtownschenectady.org.
