WASHINGTON — The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced on Monday that it has launched an investigation into the alleged hacking of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign’s internal communications. The campaign has pointed fingers at the Iranian government for the cyber intrusion.
Over the weekend, the former president revealed that his campaign was alerted by Microsoft about a potential breach by Iran on one of their websites. However, Trump reassured that the hackers were only able to access publicly available information.
According to a report by the Washington Post on Monday, the FBI is also probing into a similar cyber attack aimed at the campaign advisors of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
The investigation was initiated in June, during Biden’s presidential run, with the suspicion that Iran was attempting to pilfer data from both presidential campaigns. This information was provided by sources close to the matter, as reported by the newspaper.
There has been no immediate response from the Harris campaign regarding the alleged hack. Harris was named the Democratic presidential nominee after Biden stepped down from the race last month.
The Iranian government, on the other hand, has categorically denied any involvement in the hacking of the Trump campaign.
Trump’s campaign has referred to a study published on Friday by Microsoft researchers. The study suggests that hackers, allegedly linked to the Iranian government, attempted to infiltrate the account of a “high-ranking official” associated with a presidential campaign in June.
The report further elaborates that the hackers managed to seize control of an account owned by a former political advisor, which was then used to target the official. However, the report refrained from disclosing any further details regarding the identities of the targets.
