ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — In a landmark ‌decision, the highest court in New York has upheld a law that⁢ allows any registered‍ voter‌ to cast their⁢ vote by mail. This ‌ruling comes as a response to⁣ a Republican challenge to ‌the ‍legislation.

The ⁤state Court of Appeals, in a 6-1 ruling, confirmed ‌the decisions of lower courts, stating that the voting expansion ⁢law, which was ⁢passed ⁣by the Legislature ‍last year, does⁣ not infringe on the state’s constitution. The lawsuit was a part ⁢of a broader GOP initiative to tighten voting regulations following the 2020 election,⁣ spearheaded by ⁤U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik.

The challengers of the law contended that the⁤ Constitution necessitates most people to‍ vote in person.

However, Chief Judge ⁣Rowan Wilson, authoring the majority⁣ opinion, stated that there‍ is no “clear, unequivocal, ‍and persistent” interpretation by the government that⁢ the constitution mandates in-person voting.

In 2021, Democrats made an attempt to broaden mail voting through a constitutional amendment. However, this proposal⁤ was turned down by voters after a campaign led‌ by conservatives who argued it would pave the way for voter fraud.

Ed ⁤Cox,‍ the ⁣State Republican Party Chairman, highlighted the voters’ rejection of the ⁤amendment in a prepared statement. He‌ described the top court’s decision as “an affront” to the people of New York.

“This ruling is⁤ clearly in⁢ opposition to what generations of New York legislators, attorneys, and judges have decided, and what ⁤the people expressed‍ in ⁣2021 ⁣when they rejected the amendment,” Cox ⁤stated.
