CHICAGO — The Democratic Vice‌ Presidential nominee, Tim Walz, rallied his party members⁤ with ⁢a spirited​ speech on Wednesday evening,⁣ promising ⁣a victory for him and his running mate, Kamala Harris, over the Republican incumbent, ⁣Donald Trump, in the upcoming November election.

Walz, the Governor of Minnesota, who was‍ relatively⁤ unknown on the national stage just a fortnight‍ ago, admitted that this was his first time delivering a⁤ speech ​of such magnitude. However, he drew parallels with his past experience as ⁢a high school football coach, stating,​ “I have given ‍a lot⁢ of pep talks.”

The audience reciprocated his enthusiasm with ⁣chants of ⁢”Coach, ⁣Coach, Coach!”

Walz brought his ‍straightforward manner and small-town ethos to ⁣the national platform, sharing ‌the spotlight with a host⁣ of political heavyweights and celebrity entertainers on the third night of ‍the Democratic National Convention in ‍Chicago.

At the age‍ of⁣ 60, Walz accepted his party’s nomination for the Vice⁤ Presidency.

He⁤ painted a ‌picture of an⁣ America where no child ‌goes hungry, where health care and housing​ are considered basic human rights, and where “the government stays the hell out of your bedroom,” ⁢a clear reference to‌ Republican attacks on abortion rights and same-sex marriage.

Walz warned ⁤of the dangers of a second Trump ​term, ​arguing that‌ it would only ‍serve the‍ interests of the‍ wealthy and the extreme right.

Walz’s ⁤17-year-old son,⁣ Gus,⁣ was seen⁣ in‍ the audience⁣ next to ⁤his grandmother and ‍aunt, visibly ⁤moved by his father’s speech, shouting, “That’s my ⁣Dad,”‍ and shedding tears.

Harris, 59, is scheduled to address the convention on ⁣its final ⁢night, Thursday.

Winfrey, Clinton lend ‌their support

Television icon ‍Oprah Winfrey, former⁤ President Bill Clinton, and other⁣ notable ⁤figures joined the chorus of ⁤voices advocating for Harris, arguing ⁤that ‌while Trump is self-serving, ⁢Harris is dedicated to serving the country.

Clinton, 78, ‍urged the crowd‌ at the convention, his 12th, ‍to “Next time you‌ hear him, don’t count the lies. Count the I’s.”

Winfrey, identifying⁣ herself as an independent voter, ⁢appealed‍ to other independents and undecided voters, stating, “Decency and respect are on ⁤the ballot in 2024.”

Her surprise appearance on stage was met with a standing ovation⁤ from the delegates.

Following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the⁣ race on November‌ 5, Vice ​President Harris emerged as the Democratic candidate for 2024, ⁢bringing ​the lesser-known Walz⁤ into the national spotlight.

Among the evening’s entertainment ​were performances by American singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder ‍and comedic commentary‍ from​ actress Mindy Kaling about her friend Kamala.

Republicans who have ⁢defected⁣ from their party joined Democratic loyalists in supporting the Harris-Walz ticket, with a ⁤focus ⁢on the‍ events ​of ⁣January 6, 2021. A video was shown of Trump ‍encouraging his supporters to “be strong and fight” before ⁣they stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt ⁢to ⁤overturn Biden’s 2020 victory.

The video was⁤ met with silence from the delegates, ​a stark contrast to the cheers​ and applause ⁢that filled the⁢ convention hall throughout the⁤ night.

Former⁢ House Speaker Nancy Pelosi,⁣ who was in office on January 6, reminded the ⁣audience: “Let us not forget who assaulted democracy on Jan.‌ 6: ⁤He did. But let us ​not ‌forget who saved democracy ‌that day:⁣ We did.”

Polls indicate that Biden, 81, was‌ trailing Trump before⁢ he ‍stepped aside to allow Harris to take the party’s top spot; current polls show her leading her Republican opponent in several key states.

Continued​ disagreement over Gaza

The convention has largely avoided discussing Biden’s support for⁢ Israel’s attack ‍on Hamas-controlled⁣ Gaza, a contentious ​issue within the ⁢party. Palestinian health officials report that the offensive has resulted in over 40,000 casualties.

The⁤ parents of Israeli‍ hostage Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Jon Polin and Rachel Goldberg, ‌received ⁣a standing⁣ ovation and‍ chants ​of “Bring Them Home” when they took the stage. Goldberg-Polin, 23,​ was among more than 200 hostages taken by Palestinian Hamas militants during their October 7 attack on⁤ Israel.

“The return of the hostages is not a political issue. It is a humanitarian issue,” said Polin.

Leaders of the Uncommitted ‌National Movement, which ⁣mobilized ⁣nearly 750,000 voters during the primary ⁣elections to protest ‌U.S. support for Israel’s war in Gaza, announced late on‍ Wednesday that‌ convention organizers had denied their request to include a Palestinian speaker in⁢ the program.

A small ⁤group of allies began a sit-in⁣ outside​ the convention ⁣center⁤ to protest ‌the exclusion,‌ vowing to remain until they are granted a speaking slot.
