WASHINGTON — In the upcoming U.S. presidential election, Democratic nominee and current Vice President Kamala Harris has issued a challenge to her Republican adversary, Donald Trump. She has urged him to engage in a debate where their microphones remain active throughout the entire event.
Both Harris and the former president have consented to participate in a debate, which is scheduled to be broadcasted by ABC News on the 10th of September.
In a recent post on social media platform X, Harris expressed, “Donald Trump seems to be yielding to his advisors who are discouraging him from debating with a live microphone. If his own team lacks faith in him, it’s hard to expect the American people to have any.”
She further added, “We are vying for the position of President of the United States. It’s only fair that we debate in a transparent manner — with the microphones switched on throughout.”
Trump, on the other hand, has expressed his preference for having his microphone on during the debate. He was not in favor of it being muted during his previous debate against then-rival President Joe Biden.
The concept of “hot mics” can be a double-edged sword for political candidates. While they can capture candid comments that may not have been intended for public consumption, they also prevent the debaters from interrupting their opponent.
ABC News has yet to respond to requests for comments on this matter.
This debate will mark the first time Harris and Trump go head-to-head since Biden withdrew from the presidential race. Biden’s decision followed a lackluster performance at a CNN debate in June, which raised questions about his age.
In related news, Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz and Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance have agreed to participate in a debate on CBS News, scheduled for October 1.
