(AP – MODIFIED) — In a shocking⁣ revelation,​ federal prosecutors have charged ‍a former New York state government official, who previously served under ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo and current Gov. Kathy Hochul, with acting as an undisclosed agent for the Chinese government. This news was ⁣unveiled in a comprehensive indictment on Tuesday.

The accused, Linda Sun, held various positions​ within the New York state government before ascending to the role of deputy chief⁤ of staff ⁣for Hochul. Sun and her husband, Chris Hu, were apprehended on Tuesday morning at ⁣their lavish $3.5 ⁤million residence in Long Island.

According to​ a spokesperson for the U.S. ‍attorney’s office in Brooklyn, ‌Sun and Hu are slated to make their initial court appearance on Tuesday afternoon.

The indictment ‍alleges that Sun, at the behest of Chinese officials, prevented representatives of ​the Taiwanese government from interacting with high-ranking officials in New York state. She is also accused of manipulating New York governmental messaging to⁤ coincide with ⁢the Chinese government’s priorities and attempting to ⁢arrange ‌a trip to China ​for a prominent New York politician. Hu faces charges of money laundering conspiracy, conspiracy to commit‍ bank fraud,⁢ and misuse of means of identification.

In exchange for their‌ services,​ the couple allegedly received benefits such as assistance for Hu’s business activities in China and undisclosed tickets to⁤ performances by visiting Chinese orchestra ⁢and ballet groups. The indictment also mentions a personal chef of a Chinese government ​official preparing “Nanjing-style salted ducks” for delivery to⁤ Sun’s parents’ home.

The indictment further alleges that the couple laundered‌ the financial proceeds, using them to⁢ purchase their property in Manhasset, a‌ $1.9 million ⁢condominium in Hawaii, and luxury vehicles, including a 2024 Ferrari.

United States ‍Attorney Breon Peace stated, “As alleged, while appearing to serve the⁢ people of New York as Deputy Chief of Staff within the New York State Executive Chamber, the defendant and her ‌husband actually worked to further the interests of the Chinese government and the CCP. The illicit scheme enriched⁣ the defendant’s family to the tune of millions of dollars.”

Seth DuCharme, Sun’s ⁤attorney, did not immediately respond ‍to an email seeking‌ comment.

The FBI conducted a ‌search⁣ of the couple’s‍ $3.5 million home in Manhasset in late July, but details were not disclosed at the​ time.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Sun served in the state government for approximately 15 years, ‌holding positions in Cuomo’s administration and ⁤eventually becoming Hochul’s deputy chief of staff.‌ In November 2022,‍ Sun ⁤accepted a position ⁣at the New York Department of ‍Labor as deputy ​commissioner for strategic business development, but she⁣ resigned ⁤from that role in March 2023.

A spokesperson for Hochul’s office stated that Sun was dismissed after “discovering evidence ⁤of misconduct.” The statement reads, ⁣“This individual was hired by the Executive Chamber more than a ​decade ago. We terminated her employment in March 2023 after discovering evidence of misconduct, immediately reported her actions to law enforcement and have assisted law enforcement throughout this process.”

A request for comment sent to a spokesman for Cuomo⁢ did not receive an immediate⁣ response.

Sun and Hu reside in a gated‌ community on Long Island known as Stone Hill.⁣ The couple purchased the house in 2021 but transferred it into a trust earlier this year,‌ as per ​records.
