From the bustling corridors of Congress in SALT LAKE CITY, Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, shared his insights on the recent presidential debate with the press on Wednesday.
The debate was a significant event, marking the first face-off between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump ahead of the November Election Day.
Having been a participant in a presidential debate himself, when he challenged former President Barack Obama in 2012, Romney described what he saw as “a quintessential Trump performance,” as per a video clip sourced by MSNBC News.

Regarding Vice President Kamala Harris, Romney expressed, “A lot of people weren’t familiar with her, apart from a few unflattering snippets that might have circulated on the internet.”
“What people saw was, ’Actually, she’s a smart, competent individual who has a stance on issues,’ and she proved that repeatedly,” he further elaborated. As reported by The Hill, Romney wasn’t alone in his positive assessment of Harris. New Hampshire’s Republican Governor, Chris Sununu, stated, “Kamala definitely emerged victorious in the debate.”
However, Romney pointed out that debates, like the one on Tuesday night, don’t “usually have a lasting impact on the fortunes of either candidate.”
He wasn’t perturbed by Trump’s remarks about Haitian immigrants.
“I have a cat allergy, so this doesn’t concern me greatly. If it turns out to be true, it won’t cause me much distress,” he commented, as reported by CNN’s Manu Raju. Yet, Romney expressed worry over Trump’s reluctance to state his position on Ukraine’s conflict with Russia.

Who Will Sen. Mitt Romney Vote For?
Back in May, the senator, who isn’t running for reelection this year, made it clear that Trump wouldn’t receive his vote, but didn’t disclose his preferred candidate.
“I’m not making that announcement here and now,” Romney stated. “I won’t be voting for President Trump. I’ve made that clear. For some, character isn’t the top priority. For me, it is. When someone has been found guilty of sexual assault by a jury, that’s not someone I want my children and grandchildren to look up to as the president of the United States.”
More recently, around 200 former staff members of former Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, Sen. John McCain, and Sen. Mitt Romney have endorsed Harris.
“We have numerous genuine, ideological differences with Vice President Harris and Gov. Walz. That’s expected. The alternative, however, is simply unacceptable,” the staff members penned in a letter, initially reported by USA Today.
Romney’s Views on Biden
When Biden announced his decision to withdraw from the 2024 race and endorse Harris, Romney issued a statement, commending the president.
“I’m a traditional Republican and he’s a traditional Democrat; naturally, President Biden and I often disagreed. I opposed many of his initiatives,” the Utah senator stated. “But we did find common ground on infrastructure, Ukraine, the Electoral Count Act, adding religious liberty protections to the marriage bill, gun safety measures, and chip manufacturing.”
Romney expressed respect for Biden after working with him over the past few years, adding, “His decision to withdraw from the race was correct and is in the best interest of the country.”
