MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — A significant prison break has occurred in Nigeria’s Borno state, with a reported 274 inmates escaping due to severe flooding, according to the Nigerian Correctional Service. This disaster comes amidst reports from aid agencies that over 1,000 lives have been lost across western and central Africa due to similar flooding incidents.
Initially, a total of 281 inmates managed to escape during their transfer to a more secure facility. However, seven of these escapees were later apprehended, as stated by Nigerian Correctional Service spokesman Abubakar Umar in a press release on Sunday.
“The floodwaters caused significant damage to the prison infrastructure, including the medium security custodial center in Maiduguri and the staff quarters within the city,” Umar explained.
Umar further assured that the service has detailed records of the escapees, including their biometric data, and has made this information publicly accessible to aid in their recapture.
The search for the remaining escapees is still underway, he confirmed.
Recent weeks have seen devastating floods across Nigeria, resulting in 269 fatalities and displacing over 640,000 individuals, as per the latest figures from the country’s disaster management agency.
The northern region of Nigeria, where Borno state is located, has been the hardest hit by these floods, the data revealed.
Last month, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency issued a warning about the rising water levels of the Niger River, one of the country’s major rivers, urging states to remain vigilant.
According to projections from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, extreme rainfall events are predicted to become more frequent and intense across almost all of Africa, including Nigeria.
Approximately 4 million people have been affected by floods across Nigeria and its neighboring countries in west and central Africa. The surging waters have left a trail of destruction, including numerous human casualties.
In Chad, flooding has claimed at least 487 lives, as reported by Chadian media, while similar flood incidents in Niger have resulted in 265 deaths. Aid groups have reported an additional 55 fatalities in Mali.
In Cameroon, recent floods have reportedly caused up to 20 deaths. Other parts of Africa, such as northeastern Sudan, have also been impacted, with at least 97 deaths reported by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
On Wednesday, an overflowing dam in northern Nigeria led to floodwaters engulfing a zoo, resulting in animals including crocodiles and snakes being swept into nearby communities.
