LONDON — An unexpected incident ‍occurred on⁣ a British train when two squirrels decided ‌to hitch a ride, leading to the cancellation‍ of the service, ⁢as reported by Great Western Railway on Wednesday.

The unusual event took place on‍ Saturday, causing the‍ 08:54 a.m. local time service departing from Reading, located in ⁤the southern part of England, to be prematurely terminated⁢ before it could reach its final stop, Gatwick Airport.

Upon ⁤reaching Redhill, Surrey, railway staff made attempts to coax ⁢the uninvited guests off the train. However, one ⁤of the squirrels stood ⁣its ground, refusing to leave the train, according to the railway’s statement.

A spokesperson‌ for the ⁣railway confirmed, “The 0854 Reading to Gatwick service was unfortunately terminated at⁣ Redhill due to the unexpected boarding of two squirrels at Gomshall, in violation of railway ‘by-claws’.”

They further added, “Despite our best efforts to remove them at Redhill, one of the‌ squirrels remained defiant and was ‌taken ⁣back to Reading, bringing a rather nutty adventure to a close.”

While it’s not uncommon⁢ to see pets‍ like dogs on trains in Britain, the sight of rodents as‌ passengers is certainly less frequent.

It’s ‍worth noting that the UK ‌is home⁢ to an estimated 2.7 million gray squirrels, a number that continues⁣ to grow, as⁣ per data from the ⁤Woodland Trust, a charity dedicated to conservation.
