SCHENECTADY — A shocking incident unfolded in Schenectady as a 12-year-old local boy was apprehended for allegedly issuing a threat to his school via the popular social media platform, Snapchat, as reported by the police on Tuesday.
The case took a serious turn when the child’s parent willingly handed over a shotgun to the police. However, it was clarified that the firearm was not in the possession of the minor at any point.
The investigation was initiated on Monday evening when the police were alerted about a potential school threat posted on Snapchat, thanks to their collaboration with the FBI.
The alarming post stated, ”I’m shooting the school tmr,” according to the police.
With the help of the device’s IP address, detectives were able to trace the threat back to a location in Schenectady’s Mont Pleasant neighborhood.
Upon reaching the location, the officers made contact with the 12-year-old boy and his parent. Both of them cooperated fully with the detectives, as per the police report.
The minor was taken into custody and the parent voluntarily handed over the shotgun for safekeeping.
The boy was subsequently taken for further processing.
“The department has been in constant touch with the school district regarding this incident and as of now, no additional threat to safety has been identified,” the police stated in a press release.
The school district also acknowledged the incident on its Facebook page, highlighting the close coordination with the police and reassuring that no additional threat to safety has been identified.
