Major Freeman’s name is synonymous with excellence in the basketball world.
The latest addition to the Siena men’s basketball team, Major Freeman, has been honored as a Preseason Second Team All-MAAC selection at the MAAC Basketball Tipoff, which took place at the Ocean Casino Resort.
In a survey of the 13 MAAC head coaches, the Saints, as a team, are expected to secure the ninth position.
Freeman has been a standout player at Spartanburg Methodist Junior College in South Carolina for the last two seasons.
The 6-foot-3, 190-pound guard from Atlanta was recognized as the MAAC Preseason Newcomer of the Year by Mid-Major Madness recently, and JucoRecruiting.com ranked him as the 41st best junior college prospect and the 11th best guard.
Freeman’s impressive performance led Spartanburg Methodist to back-to-back 20-win seasons. He averaged 11.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and a 2.33 assist-to-turnover ratio, shooting 52% from the field and 42% from beyond the arc over 59 games. His stellar performance last season earned him NJCAA Region 10 First Team honors, with an average of 15.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 1.4 steals.
Amarri Monroe (formerly known as Tice) from the reigning regular-season champion Quinnipiac was chosen as the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year.
The MAAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll has Quinnipiac as the favorite to retain their regular season championship, with 166 total points and 11 out of 13 first-place votes. Marist and Fairfield each received one first-place vote.
The preseason rankings, with points, are as follows: 1. Quinnipiac 166; 2. Marist 144; 3. Iona 139; 4. Fairfield 119; 5. Saint Peter’s 118; 6. Merrimack 112; 7. Rider 99; 8. Niagara 66; 9. Siena 54; 10. Manhattan 49; 11. Mount St. Mary’s 42; 12. Canisius 38; 13. Sacred Heart 37.
