Siena Men’s Basketball: Saints Ranked Ninth in MAAC Preseason Survey; Freeman Selected for All-MAAC Second Team

Major Freeman’s name is synonymous with excellence in the basketball‍ world.

The ‌latest addition to the Siena men’s basketball team, Major Freeman,‍ has been honored ‍as a Preseason Second Team All-MAAC selection at the ‌MAAC Basketball Tipoff, which took place at the Ocean ‍Casino Resort.

In‍ a survey of the 13 MAAC head coaches, the Saints, ⁢as⁣ a team, are expected to secure the ninth position.

Freeman has been a‌ standout player at Spartanburg​ Methodist Junior College in South Carolina for the last ⁤two seasons.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound guard from​ Atlanta was‌ recognized as the MAAC Preseason Newcomer ⁤of the ​Year‍ by Mid-Major Madness recently, ⁣and JucoRecruiting.com ​ranked him as the 41st best junior college prospect⁤ and​ the 11th best ⁢guard.

Freeman’s impressive performance led Spartanburg‌ Methodist to back-to-back 20-win seasons. He averaged 11.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists,⁤ and a 2.33 assist-to-turnover ratio, shooting 52% from the field and 42% from beyond the arc over 59 games. His stellar performance last season earned him NJCAA Region ​10 ‍First Team​ honors, with an ⁤average of 15.4⁢ points, 5.1⁣ rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 1.4 steals.

Amarri Monroe (formerly known as Tice) from the reigning regular-season ‌champion Quinnipiac was chosen as the MAAC⁣ Preseason Player of the Year.

The⁤ MAAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll has⁤ Quinnipiac as the favorite to⁢ retain their regular season championship, with 166 total points and 11 out of 13 first-place votes.‍ Marist and Fairfield each​ received one first-place vote.

The preseason rankings, with points, are as follows: 1.‌ Quinnipiac 166; 2. Marist 144; 3. Iona ⁤139; 4. Fairfield 119; 5. Saint Peter’s 118; 6. Merrimack 112; 7. Rider 99; 8. Niagara 66; 9. Siena 54;⁤ 10. Manhattan 49;‍ 11. Mount St. Mary’s 42; 12. Canisius 38; 13. Sacred Heart 37.
