SCHENECTADY — In the aftermath of the tragic shooting of ninth grader Dubar Knowles at a house party on Congress Street, Schenectady City School District Superintendent Carlos Cotto Jr. passionately appealed to the community on Tuesday to “unite and put an end to the violence”.
The unfortunate incident occurred around 11:20 p.m. on Saturday at 1122 Congress St. during a party. A 13-year-old girl, who remains unidentified, was also injured in the incident and was later found by police on Chrisler Avenue. She is currently in stable condition at a local hospital.
“I implore our community, our youth, and parents, to unite and put an end to the violence plaguing our community,” Cotto urged. “Our students, staff, and school community deserve better. It’s crucial that we come together and support each other, especially our youth, as we navigate through these challenging times.”
On Monday, Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day, Cotto met with district administrators and the Schenectady police to devise safety plans for the school reopening on Tuesday.
Following the tragic incident, students returned to school amidst an increased police presence. Apart from the regular school resource officers (SROs) stationed at city schools, additional patrol units were deployed at the start and end of the school day at district buildings. Cotto confirmed on Tuesday that the first day back at school went smoothly without any safety incidents.
On Tuesday morning, Cotto visited the high school and observed a somber atmosphere in the wake of the shooting. “From the administration to our students, there were a range of emotions. The incident has had a profound impact on our community, and it’s crucial that we support each other during this difficult time,” Cotto said.
Faculty meetings were held across the district on Tuesday morning to plan for providing mental health support to students affected by the incident. Counselors are available for all students who need their assistance.
“As a district, we’re taking proactive measures to prevent this tragedy from affecting more students,” Cotto said. “We have a team of counselors and mental health professionals ready to cater to the needs of our students across all our buildings.”
No arrests have been made in relation to the shootings, and the police are seeking public assistance, including footage from nearby Ring doorbell cameras. Cotto also urged students and staff to share any information they might have about the incident with the district and city police on the police Tips Line at 518-788-6566.
“We urge anyone with information related to this incident to contact us and the police department so that we can continue to support our students and community,” Cotto said.
Prior to the fatal shooting, the school board held a series of public meetings in September focused on school safety following a series of fights among students at the high school during the first weeks of the semester, including a Sept. 17 stabbing at the high school which resulted in two students sustaining non-life-threatening injuries.
On Sept. 30, the school board approved the purchase of weapons detection systems for the high school and the district’s three middle schools. A safety fair is scheduled for Oct. 24 at the high school where residents can test various options for the detection systems that the district may acquire. The board also passed a resolution committing to bolstering mental health and student support services in the district. The district is tentatively planning to implement the weapons detection systems during Christmas break.
In light of Saturday’s shooting, Cotto mentioned that the district is considering accelerating the implementation of additional safety measures. “There’s a sense of urgency, so while we have the safety fair scheduled for Oct. 24, I’m working with our safety director [Jeffrey Russo] to see if there are measures we can implement even earlier,” Cotto said. “We will proceed as planned, but if we can make changes for the better, we certainly will.”
