BURNT HILLS — In‍ the first round‍ of the Section 2 Class AA ⁣tournament, Amsterdam’s senior goalie,⁣ Juan Rivas, put up a valiant fight to⁢ keep his team in the game against Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake on Wednesday.

Despite an early goal by Burnt Hills, ranked No. ⁣7, Rivas was a formidable force in goal, successfully blocking ‍numerous attempts, including several close-range ⁣shots.

As the⁣ second half⁢ was nearing⁤ its end,⁣ a hand ‍ball was called on No. 10 Amsterdam, leading to a penalty kick ⁣for⁣ Burnt Hills. Atticus Marvin, with ⁤a well-placed kick, managed to score, pushing the Spartans to ‍a‌ thrilling 2-1 ⁣victory.

“The penalty kick was crucial,” Marvin admitted, explaining his approach ⁤to the‍ decisive shot. “I took ⁢a moment to breathe, assessed the⁤ goalie’s position, chose‍ my spot,‍ and aimed⁤ for it.”

Marvin’s kick hit the net, providing ⁤a much-needed⁢ relief for the Spartans with about eight minutes left in their first postseason⁢ game.

However, considering Rivas’ impressive ⁢performance up ⁤to‌ that point, nothing was certain.

“His performance ⁣was extraordinary,” Marvin praised Amsterdam’s goalie. ⁣“Despite our 16 corners, none came⁢ close to getting past him. He was confident and made‌ it nearly impossible for us to get shots past him in the‌ second half.”

With 20 saves ‌in the playoff game, Marvin kept‍ his team just⁤ a goal ‌away from victory.

“Ever since he joined us, I’ve believed in his ability to save anything that ‌comes⁢ his way,” Amsterdam coach Christopher Green said‍ of Rivas. “He’s made‌ some incredible saves, the kind that not many goalies can pull‌ off. ‍He really⁢ stepped up today and kept us in the ⁤game.

“There ⁢were several instances where Amsterdam broke through our line and he stepped up, made a good read and used his talent to make the ⁢save.”

Burnt Hills scored its first⁣ goal early⁣ on,‌ thanks to ⁢Maxum ⁢Nafus who capitalized on ‌a ball‌ played to him by ‍Ryan Cassidy. Despite⁣ the Spartans dominating ⁤most of⁢ the game, it wasn’t until the penalty kick that ⁤Burnt Hills managed to score again.

“It feels fantastic to‍ know that we gave⁢ it our all,” Nafus said of the win. “We⁢ just need⁣ to bring ⁣the same intensity to our next game against Bethlehem.”

“It feels incredible,” Marvin added. “We certainly⁢ wish ⁣we could have scored⁣ more goals, but at‌ the end of‌ the day, we’re advancing.⁢ We just need⁤ to maintain the same confidence we had today.”

Amsterdam managed ⁢to level the game in the second half, 1-1, when Moises Morales capitalized on a cross from Aundray Fowler.

“It was heartening to see the boys put in such effort, to play forward and get that ⁣cross in,” Green ⁣said. “Having a player run to ⁢the far post is a big achievement for⁣ us. We didn’t do that much this season, and it was rewarding to see us⁤ score after someone committed to⁤ the run to‍ the far⁣ post ⁢and ‍converted on the cross. It gave us more energy to keep fighting.”

With this win, Burnt Hills (3-9-3 overall) advances to face No. 2 Bethlehem in the quarterfinals on Friday at 7 p.m.

Amsterdam concluded its season with an overall⁤ record of 7-5-4.

Amsterdam 0 1⁣ — 1

Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake 1 1 — 2

Amsterdam scoring: Morales‍ 1-0; Fowler 0-1. Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake scoring: Nafus 1-0;⁤ Marvin 1-0; Cassidy 0-1. Goalies: Amsterdam, Rivas, 20 saves. Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, Yerina, 1 save.
