SCHENECTADY — In a recent development, Lexis Figuereo, a prominent figure in the Saratoga Black Lives Matter movement, has been taken into custody. He is alleged to have brandished an AR-15-style firearm at an individual during a dispute at his partner’s residence in Schenectady on Thursday.
The 37-year-old advocate for social justice has entered a plea of not guilty to the charges of menacing and weapons possession, as per media sources. Both charges are classified as misdemeanors.
The person at the receiving end of the alleged threat has sought a protective order.
Represented by Ava Biren Agree, Figuereo has chosen to remain silent on the matter when approached by the Daily Gazette.
He is scheduled to appear in Schenectady City Court in the coming month.
His legal team has put forth the argument that Figuereo and his partner were purportedly attacked by an uninvited guest at their Raymond Street home, as reported by the Times Union. Local news agencies first broke the news on Friday.
Attempts to reach Schenectady police for a statement have been unsuccessful.
Over the past four years, Figuereo has had several run-ins with law enforcement, coinciding with his emergence as a champion for social justice in the political landscape of Saratoga Springs.
This incident comes in the same week as Saratoga BLM’s announcement of their intention to establish an emergency response team. This team aims to assist individuals dealing with overdoses and mental health crises, without the need for police intervention. The plan is set to be implemented by 2025.
