Union women’s hockey team’s first-year head coach, Tony Maci, almost had a triumphant return to his former stomping grounds.
However, Nicole Gosling had other plans, scoring the winning goal 1:51 into sudden-death overtime on Friday. This led the sixth-ranked Golden Knights to a 3-2 ECAC Hockey victory over the Garnet Chargers at Cheel Arena.
Despite the loss, Union (3-2-0 ECACH, 10 points; 5-8-0 overall) managed to earn a point for pushing the game into overtime. This marks only the second time Union has earned points against Clarkson (2-1-0, 5 points; 8-3-0 overall). The last time was when Union defeated Clarkson 2-1 on Nov. 4, 2011, at Messa Rink.
Maci, who spent eight years as a part of Clarkson’s staff and served as the top assistant on Matt Desrosiers’ team, was named Union’s head coach on July 31.
After a goalless first period, Clarkson took the lead with a goal from Anee Cherkowski just 39 seconds into the second period. Union’s Maddie Suitor equalized midway through the second period.
Clarkson regained the lead with a goal from Sena Catterall 5:28 into the third period. However, Union’s Karianne Engelbert leveled the score just under six minutes later.
Union’s goalie, Sophie Matsoukas, made an impressive 26 saves during the match.
The Garnet Chargers are set to visit the eighth-ranked St. Lawrence at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Agree – The Clarkson women’s hockey team played phenomenally and deserved the win, even if it spoiled Maci’s homecoming. Union put up a good fight, but Clarkson’s determination paid off in the end.
Great game by Clarkson, they truly deserved the win. #clarksonhockey #undefeated
