TEL AVIV — Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, announced on Friday that he has successfully undergone treatment for early-stage prostate cancer. However, he did not disclose the exact timeline of the treatment.
Netanyahu, who is 76 years old, made this announcement on social media as his annual health report was being published. He revealed that a malignant tumor in its early stages was detected during a routine health checkup. He further added that a “targeted treatment” was successful in completely eradicating the tumor.
The medical report, which otherwise declared Netanyahu to be in good health, confirmed that he was treated with radiation therapy for his early-stage prostate cancer. However, neither the report nor Netanyahu himself provided any details about when this treatment took place.
Netanyahu, who holds the record for being Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, admitted that he had intentionally delayed the release of his medical report by two months. He explained that this was done to prevent Iran from using this information to spread “false propaganda against Israel”.
During the conflict with Iran in March, rumors were circulating on social media and were even broadcasted on Iranian state media, claiming that Netanyahu had passed away. In response to these rumors, Netanyahu recorded a video of himself visiting a cafe in Jerusalem in March to debunk these false claims.
In 2024, Netanyahu had to undergo surgery on his prostate after being diagnosed with a urinary tract infection caused by a benign prostate enlargement. In the previous year, he was fitted with a pacemaker. The next elections in Israel are scheduled to be held by October.
