GLENVILLE — A devastating fire consumed a Glenville residence on Tuesday, sparking a brush fire that required over seven hours to fully extinguish, according to Scotia Fire Chief David Wood, who shared the details on Wednesday.
Fire departments from Scotia and other parts of Glenville, along with Schenectady and county first responders, all rushed to the scene. The fire occurred within the jurisdiction of the Beukendaal Volunteer Fire District. Unfortunately, Beukendaal officials were not available to provide a comment.
Firefighters were alerted to a structure fire at 616 Waters Rd. around 12:40 p.m. on Tuesday, Wood reported.
The house, located a distance from the road and without any nearby hydrants, posed a significant challenge to the firefighters. Water had to be transported to the site. The home was unfortunately declared a “complete loss,” according to Wood.
Thankfully, no human injuries were reported in the fire, Wood confirmed.
Two dogs were rescued from the burning house, but the fate of a family cat named Shelby remains unknown. Shelby, a black and tan striped cat, was last seen wearing a pink collar, according to a family member’s Facebook post.
The Department of Environmental Conservation also joined local and county officials on the scene as the embers ignited a “substantial” brush fire, Wood added.
Wood, who was present at the scene, reported that their department withdrew around 6 p.m. The brush fire was finally extinguished about an hour to an hour and a half later.
Waters Road is nestled in the woods near Verf Kill and Wolf Hollow. The cause of the fire remains under investigation as of Wednesday.
The affected family has found temporary accommodation, Wood confirmed. The Sacandaga Parent Teachers Association, where a family member serves as treasurer, has set up a GoFundMe to help the family. The fundraiser aims to provide essentials for the family’s two young children, aged seven and four, and their pets. As of Wednesday afternoon, the campaign had raised $9,900.
