SCHENECTADY — Last week, a body was discovered in the Mohawk River, in Niskayuna. The body has now been identified as a Schenectady man who was reported missing the previous month, according to a statement released by the police on Thursday.
The Schenectady Police Department confirmed the identity of the deceased as 21-year-old Malachi Fennicks.
Following an investigation, the Schenectady police have ruled out any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death. However, they did not provide further details on the cause of death.
Fennicks was reported missing to the Schenectady police on March 3. At that time, the police had sought public assistance in locating him, describing him as a missing vulnerable adult.
He was last believed to be in the vicinity of Van Vranken Avenue in Schenectady during the early morning hours of that day, as per the police records.
The discovery of Fennicks’ body was made following a call to dispatchers at 6:23 p.m. on April 23, reporting a possible human body in the river. This information was provided by the Niskayuna Police Department.
Several agencies responded to the call, and the body was soon recovered from the river, as reported by the Niskayuna police.
The Schenectady police expressed their gratitude to the Niskayuna police, the New York State Police Dive Team, Canadian Pacific Police, Niskayuna Fire District #1, Niskayuna Fire District #2, and the Alplaus Fire Department for their invaluable assistance during the recovery operation.
In a press release, the Schenectady Police Department extended their “deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Fennicks during this difficult time.”
