SCHENECTADY — A local resident of Schenectady was found guilty on Wednesday of predatory sexual assault against a minor, whom he had initially contacted via Facebook, according to the Schenectady County District Attorney’s Office.
The individual, Taiquan Brown, aged 23, was declared guilty after a period of deliberation that spanned over two days and lasted more than four hours, as stated by the prosecutors.
In the year 2024, Brown had sent a friend request to the minor on Facebook. Shortly after, he initiated conversations of a sexual nature with her. He later managed to isolate her in a secluded location where he sexually assaulted her on two separate instances within the same year.
The case came to light in February 2025 when the victim revealed the incidents to an interviewer from the Schenectady County Child Advocacy Center. The investigation was subsequently carried out by Schenectady Police Detective Peter Verrett.
Following the verdict, Brown was detained pending sentencing. His sentencing is scheduled for July 8. He could potentially face a minimum of 10 years to life, and at most, 47 years to life, as per the prosecutors.
“The young girl displayed immense bravery in coming forward and recounting the horrific acts committed by this predator,” said Schenectady County District Attorney Robert Carney in a statement. “We are grateful for her trust in our Office to support her in taking the stand and providing the testimony that, along with other evidence, convinced the jury of Mr. Brown’s guilt.”
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Eric J. Weinhold. Brown’s defense was handled by attorneys Katherine White and Morgan Welling, from the Schenectady County Public Defender’s Office. The presiding judge was Matthew J. Sypniewski.
