ALBANY — A man from Schenectady, known as Ernesto Cabrera, who was involved in a string of thefts and other criminal activities over a span of two days in Albany, was handed a 15-year prison sentence on Friday, as per the announcement from the Albany County District Attorney’s Office.
The 26-year-old Cabrera was apprehended on Sept. 13, 2025, following a two-day crime spree, the District Attorney’s office reported.
On the previous day, Sept. 12, 2025, Cabrera was involved in a car break-in on Clinton Avenue in Albany, as stated by the District Attorney’s office. He managed to steal several items from the vehicle before the car owner confronted him and alerted the police.
Subsequently, Cabrera entered a store and threatened the clerk for money, according to the District Attorney’s office. He made a false claim of having a weapon and threatened to shoot and stab the clerk. However, the clerk bravely refused to give any money and called the police as Cabrera fled the scene.
The following day, Cabrera robbed a 16-year-old boy of his phone at knifepoint, the District Attorney’s office reported. Cabrera then visited a farmer’s market in Washington Park where he stole over $600 worth of necklaces and rings from a jewelry booth, again at knifepoint.
After the booth robbery, Cabrera approached a 6-year-old boy and threatened him with his knife, the District Attorney’s office reported. He then instructed the boy to give his mother a piece of the stolen jewelry.
The District Attorney’s office reported that Cabrera continued to brandish the knife at the boy and his mother until Albany Police Department officers arrived at the scene and apprehended him.
In February, Cabrera pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree robbery and first-degree attempted robbery, both felonies. He also admitted to two counts of second-degree menacing, two counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, endangering the welfare of a child, and petit larceny, all misdemeanors, as per the District Attorney’s office.
Judge Andra Ackerman sentenced Cabrera to 15 years in prison with an additional five years of post-release supervision, the District Attorney’s office reported.
Agree. He deserved the punishment for his actions.
