TROY — The Saratoga Springs softball team has once again proven their dominance in the region, securing their third title in the last five years in Section 2’s top-tier classification. The third-seeded Blue Streaks triumphed over the top-seeded Shenendehowa in a thrilling 10-8 victory in the Class AAA final at Lansingburgh High School, a feat 22 years in the making.
The Blue Streaks, who last clinched the title as the No. 5 seed in 2024, set the tone early with a four-run rally in the first inning. The highlight of this early offensive explosion was a towering two-run homer to left field by Emily Ruscio.
Despite the early setback, the defending champions Shenendehowa responded with equal force, scoring four runs off four hits to level the score. Blue Streaks’ starting pitcher Kendra LeClair managed to regain control, allowing only one run over the next four innings while giving up just three hits.
LeClair’s teammates provided ample support, adding another three runs in the second inning and one run each in the fourth and fifth innings. Ava Taber, the leadoff batter, had an impressive 3 for 5 performance, scoring thrice and stealing three bases. Ava Goodman, the No. 2 batter, contributed with a 2 for 4 performance, a double, two RBIs, and two runs.
Shenendehowa managed to score two runs in the bottom of the sixth, reducing their deficit to 9-7. Maya Oehlschlaeger drove in the second run with a two-out double to the opposite field. The Blue Streaks added an insurance run in the top of the seventh before Kaylee Szwarcberg delivered a clutch hit with two outs, driving in a run to make it 10-8.
LeClair showed resilience, securing the final out on a ground ball to third, wrapping up a commendable seven-inning performance that helped the Blue Streaks topple their I-87 rivals.
With a 10-12 overall record and victories in six of their last seven games, the Blue Streaks are set to face Section 3’s Cicero-North Syracuse in the regional final on Friday at 5 p.m. at Carrier Park in Syracuse.
Shenendehowa concludes the season with a 13-7 record, extending a streak of 18 years since Section 2’s top classification saw a repeat champion.
