PARIS, France — In a stern warning issued on Saturday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth cautioned that Europe is under threat from what he termed as an influx of perilous ideologies arriving via sea routes. He drew a parallel between this situation and the historical legacy of the D-Day landings, during his speech in Normandy.
These comments mirror the frequent criticisms levelled by the Trump administration against Europe. According to Washington, Europe is grappling with weak defense mechanisms, an ineffective approach to immigration, unnecessary bureaucracy, and a tendency to “silence” far-right and nationalist voices to prevent them from gaining power.
“Regrettably, today, various European beaches are being besieged by different, dangerous ideologies. Beaches in Spain, Italy, Greece, and Bulgaria are witnessing the arrival of boats and men,” Hegseth stated during his address at the Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer.
“When will the European capitals take action against this invasion or is it already too late? I sincerely hope not, and I firmly believe not,” he added.
Hegseth’s speech was part of the commemoration of the 82nd anniversary of the Allied landings in Normandy. This historic event marked the crossing of the English Channel by U.S. and Allied forces to initiate the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi occupation.
High-ranking U.S. officials, including President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, have repeatedly criticized European nations for their failure to effectively manage immigration. As recently as Friday, these criticisms were reiterated.
A document outlining the National Security Strategy, released last year, cautioned that Europe is on the brink of “civilizational erasure” and needs to make significant changes to remain a dependable U.S. ally.
This document, along with other statements made by senior officials from the Trump administration, have challenged the postwar beliefs about Europe’s close ties with its strongest ally. These comments have prompted European capitals to urgently consider reducing their dependence on U.S. technology and defense.
I disagree with Hegseth’s claim. Europe is not under ‘invasion’ of harmful ideologies, but rather a diverse continent with varying beliefs and values. The D-Day ceremony should be a time to honor those who fought for freedom, not spread fear and division.
