- The Central African Republic has consented to receive third-country deportees from the U.S., according to insiders.
- Similar arrangements have been made by the U.S. with other African countries, which critics argue have cost millions.
- The International Organization for Migration will provide support to deportees in the Central African Republic.
BANGUI — The Central African Republic has reportedly agreed to accept migrants deported by the United States from other countries, according to two sources familiar with the situation. This is the latest instance of the Trump administration forging agreements with African nations to expedite deportations.
The U.S. has previously sent third-country deportees to African nations such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Equatorial Guinea. These arrangements, which Senate Democrats claim have cost millions, are often shrouded in secrecy.
In many instances, these deportees had obtained legal protections against repatriation from U.S. immigration courts. However, rights groups argue that these third-country agreements allow the U.S. to bypass these protections.
Agreement Negotiated with U.S. Delegation
The U.S. has maintained that these deportations are legal. The agreement with the Central African Republic was discussed during a meeting in Bangui on May 18 with a U.S. delegation led by Christian Jové Ehrhardt, the State Department’s deputy assistant secretary in the Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration, according to a Central African government official.
“The Central African Republic will indeed accept immigrants deported by American authorities within the framework of agreements with the U.S.,” said the official, who wished to remain anonymous. A diplomat in the region, also speaking anonymously, confirmed that an agreement had been reached.
Uncertainty Surrounds Timing of Initial Flights
Since gaining independence from France in 1960, the Central African Republic has experienced repeated bouts of instability, leaving the majority of its 5.5 million inhabitants in poverty. President Faustin-Archange Touadera, who secured a third term in last December’s election, has sought security assistance from Russia, but has also shown renewed interest in Western partnerships for critical minerals.
Neither the Central African government source nor the regional diplomat could provide details on the number of migrants to be sent to the country, their nationalities, or when the flights might commence. However, a recent court ruling indicates that attempts have already begun.
On May 22, U.S. District Judge Lee Rosenthal issued a temporary restraining order preventing the deportation of a Turkish national, noting that U.S. officials had planned to deport the individual to the Central African Republic on May 26.
Support for Deportees
An official from the International Organization for Migration confirmed to Reuters that the organization would assist deportees upon their arrival in the Central African Republic.
The organization has previously provided support to third-country deportees in other parts of Africa, including Congo. This year, the U.S. granted $85 million to the IOM for operations in the Central African Republic.
A spokesperson for the organization did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Neither the Central African presidency nor the State Department responded to requests for comment.
The Department of Homeland Security stated that all deportees were receiving full due process and referred “questions on agreement specifics” to the State Department.
