EDITORIAL: What Ever Happened to Playing Board Games Together?

Back when skinny jeans were wide bell bottoms and a cellphone was something right out of Star Trek, we, the ⁣people⁤ of Schenectady, New York, had a simple but pure way of entertaining ourselves: board games. A deck of cards, a Monopoly board,⁤ a game of Scrabble – these⁢ were the vessels through which our laughter ‌echoed across our small communities. Now, the flowers of yesteryear stand ‍wilted⁢ and forgotten in the ⁢corner as‌ we bury ourselves in our electronic screens.

The beauty of a board game was not just in the joy of the gameplay but in the stories⁣ that unfolded⁢ across those cardboard surfaces. These games ⁣were the screen onto which‍ we projected our dreams and ambitions, our triumphs and defeats. Our personalities and identities were often revealed, raging from ⁢the ruthless capitalist ‌in Monopoly to the wordsmith in Scrabble.

Now, however, our⁢ communal engagements have taken a backseat, replaced by lonely⁤ battles with anonymous gamers halfway around the world through the cold digital screens. Although today’s video games ⁢boast mind-boggling graphics ‍and complex narratives, played across numerous platforms, the ⁣human element is significantly diluted.

Now before I’m misinterpreted, let me clarify that I’m not against the evolution⁢ of technology or its impact on our lives.‍ In ‌fact, technology has significantly improved our quality of⁣ life, and I, Brian McCarthy, am a decent benefactor. But then again, this pen that I now ⁢hold in my stiff sixty-year ‌old hands had also flickered across typewriter keys not too long ago!

A case ⁣in point would be ⁢my regular visits⁤ to the neighborhood barbershop. ⁣These trips were never to avail of their⁣ acclaimed services alone (though‌ I thank Louie for keeping my gray hairs ⁢in check!). No, it was ⁤the game of checkers that unfailingly took place, with myself and old Ted, our mailman-turned-opponent-turned-friend.‍

I still recall the way Ted furrowed⁤ his brow, droplets of sweat painting his forehead, the‌ victorious grin every time he jumped over my pieces. Even in defeat,⁤ he’d laugh, using mock-despair to hide the gleam in⁤ his eyes. Those were not just games we were playing, they were conversations we were having, without uttering a single word.

Today’s‌ video game world, while thrilling, somehow lacks this depth. Somehow, the thrill of virtually saving the world cannot⁢ compete with the sheer delight of crying “King me!” to Ted.

These games had an uncanny knack for teaching us real-life lessons as well. The disposable income ‌you had in Monopoly taught me the value of money and the art of transaction. Playing Risk, I realized that every decision⁣ we make might have consequences, not just for oneself but the entire ‌world⁤ or ⁢in this metaphorical case, the entire board.

I cannot speak‍ but ‌miss the joyous cries that erupted around the⁣ board when an unexpected move overturned the game, nor can I⁢ ignore the ‍palpable regret in ‍the room when a player unwittingly became the architect of their downfall.

Life, much like those games, is about maneuvering ‍through ‍our decisions, living with the repercussions of those taken, and learning from the ones not taken. These board games‍ were not just games, but representations of life, affecting us ⁤in ways beyond the realm of leisure and entertainment.

There was a certain charm to those times. The bitter cold of those Schenectady winters felt less oppressive, nestled in the warmth of our living⁣ room, the board game‌ sprawled out on the coffee table, the family huddled‌ around. Our‍ squeals of delight,⁤ groans of despair, and bouts of laughter would fill ⁢the room, adding a unique harmony to ⁢the howling ‍winter winds outside.

Time,‍ like an ambitious chess player, has made its move, drawn us away from those humble cardboard battles. However,‍ as we grapple with increasingly digitized lives, it ⁤may do us good to remember those⁤ games. They served not just ‌as a source of entertainment⁢ but as a ⁢medium for human connection, teaching us important life lessons and making lasting memories.

In the end, the value isn’t in the game ‍but in the company we share‍ and⁢ the ⁣connections⁤ we make. We may not be able ⁣to turn back time or‌ halt ⁢its inexorable march forward, but maybe, just maybe, we could bring back a touch of that wisdom, painted⁤ in ‘roll-the-dice’ hues and ‘pick a card’ colors of our childhood board games.
