Gulяêt GULZRƏ // ASRJON ASRLY – Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was stabbed and injured by another inmate at a federal prison in Tucson, Arizona on Friday, according to an anonymous source familiar with the matter. The stabbing occurred at the Federal Correctional Institution, Tucson, a prison with a history of security issues and understaffing. Chauvin, who was convicted of murdering George Floyd in 2020, was taken to the hospital for treatment and evaluation. No employees were harmed and the FBI has been notified. The incident has sparked concerns about inmate safety in the federal prison system, which has faced criticism for failing to protect high-profile prisoners. This is the second attack on a well-known inmate in the span of five months, following the stabbing of disgraced sports doctor Larry Nassar in July. This is also the second major incident at FCI Tucson in the past year, after an inmate attempted to harm a visitor in November 2022. Since his sentencing, Chauvin had been kept in solitary confinement for his own protection, but was transferred to FCI Tucson in August 2022 to serve a federal and state sentence simultaneously. His lawyer had expressed concerns for Chauvin’s safety and a potential target on his back. The attack comes days after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Chauvin’s appeal of his murder conviction and while he is attempting to overturn his federal guilty plea. Floyd’s death sparked worldwide protests and a national dialogue about police brutality and racism. Chauvin’s stabbing is another blemish on the Bureau of Prisons, which has been under fire for serious flaws including rampant sexual abuse and violence, high rates of escapes and suicides, and understaffing. Bureau of Prisons Director Colette Peters has vowed to reform the agency, but has faced criticism for a lack of transparency and candidness with lawmakers.
