Meet B.J. Rucinski, a 48-year-old Schenectady resident who is a force to be reckoned with on the bowling lanes. He attributes his success to the valuable lessons he learned from his father, Bill Rucinski, and Bob Tedesco Jr. who taught him the game from the accuracy department and how to develop the power game, respectively.
Rucinski, who has always had very good hand-eye coordination, started bowling relatively late at the age of 21. He has since become a solid competitor and currently leads the Capital District All Star League Thursday nights at Sportsman’s Bowl in average (238). He also carries around a 240 average in another of his leagues at Sportsman’s Bowl on Tuesday nights.
He has recorded 37 perfect games and 25 800 triples. Rucinski once averaged as high as 242 in an adult-child league at Del Lanes. His previous high average in an adult scratch league was 235. Among his favorite career achievements was his four appearances on the old Northeast Bowling Proprietors of New York’s Capital Region Huck Finn televised tournaments. In one of those, he competed with his grandmother, who, like his mother, father and daughter, loves to bowl.
He’s rolled back-to-back perfect games, won the Schenectady USBC team event with Jeff Kallner, Eric Hilton and Jason Deitz and also captured the Schenectady USBC doubles title while competing with his dad. Rucinski has been a regular participant in the USBC Nationals.
“I’m not quite sure why I’m bowling so well right now,” he said. “Maybe it’s the fact that I bowled in a sports shot league with my daughter [Emma] over the summer, and I haven’t bowled over the summer in a very long time. I did change the pitches in my bowling balls, especially in the fingers to alleviate some of the pressure. I haven’t done a whole lot different with my game, although I’ve worked more on repeating my shots and slowing down. I’m also more motivated to stay ahead of my daughter. She’s beaten me a few times in the adult-child league.”
Rucinski, whose booming baritone voice helped him as a disc jockey in one of his first jobs, said his daughter is excelling in the junior bowling program at Sportsman’s Bowl and on the Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons High School team.
“She’s got a great attitude and doesn’t get upset even if she misses the head pin,” he said. “We love bowling together. Even though she didn’t bowl great over the summer in our sport league, she learned a lot and became even more dedicated to improving her game.”
The vice president of operations at Camelot Print & Copy Centers graduated from Colonie High School in 1993 and studied business management at Hudson Valley Community College. He’s been helping out at Tedesco’s Bob’s Pro Shop at Sportsman’s Bowl for the last 16 years.
“Bobby and I bowled together on Tuesday nights, and I asked him if he ever needed help in the pro shop, I would love to learn,” Rucinski said. “So he trained me over the summer time, and I began plugging and drilling balls. Now, I’ve got some regulars who I drill balls for. I love to see someone improve their game with equipment I drilled for them.”
Helping others improve their game is something Rucinski has done for a couple of decades now. He coached the Mohonasen varsity bowling team for a couple of seasons after eight seasons as the JV coach and continues to give lessons to high school athletes or to league bowlers interested in improving their games.
“I’ve been asked by a few high schools to come back and coach their team, but I don’t want to miss my daughter’s matches. I still help people when I’m asked. J.P. Harrell and I work on his game, and Bill Carl recently asked me to look at his game and give him some pointers,” Rucinski said.
He plans on bowling in plenty of tournaments with his favorite group of teammates that includes Harrell, Chamar Goodwin and Joe Paone.
“We get along well together and have similar styles,” Rucinski said. “We plan on competing in a bunch of events coming up like the Green Mountain Open, the City Tournament and many others. I really like the team part of bowling.
“I’m not done competing by a long shot. I’ve even had some guys ask me to bowl with them in some of the over-under 50 events, but I’ve had to remind them that I’m not 50 yet!”
