SYRACUSE — The second annual NYSPHSAA girls’ wrestling invitational was a thrilling event that showcased the incredible talent of female wrestlers from Section 2. The competition was fierce, but in the end, four exceptional athletes emerged as champions.
Shaker’s Cailan Drake (114), Tamarac’s Ragan Retell (126), Ballston Spa’s Mia Collins (132), and Columbia’s Elle Hutton (185) all finished the day with first-place medals, solidifying their status as the best in their respective weight classes.
Shenendehowa teammates Isabella Gretzinger (152) and Ava Guilmette (138) both earned second-place finishes, showcasing the depth of talent in Section 2. Columbia’s Bella Satalino (126) also put on an impressive performance, earning a well-deserved second-place finish.
Shaker senior Cailan Drake, the No. 2 seed, delivered a stunning performance, defeating top-seeded Mora Peterson of Bay Shore in the 114-pound championship match. Drake’s journey to the top was filled with hard-fought victories, including a first-period pin in the first round and a 12-4 major decision in the semifinals.
The 126-pound championship match featured Tamarac’s Ragan Retell and Columbia’s Bella Satalino. Retell, who trains at the Curby Training Center, emerged victorious with a 9-5 decision, showcasing her exceptional skill and determination.
Ballston Spa junior Mia Collins, the No. 2 seed in the 132-pound division, put on a show-stopping performance, taking down top-seeded Alexa Doxey of Newfane to win a championship for the Scotties. Collins’ tenacity and skill were on full display as she secured a reversal with 17 seconds remaining to win a 6-4 decision in the quarterfinals.
Columbia junior Elle Hutton proved to be Section 2’s final champion of the day, delivering a dramatic victory in the 185-pound division. Hutton’s remarkable comeback in the semifinal round, where she secured a pin to complete an upset victory, was a testament to her resilience and unwavering spirit.
