TROY — The enchanting journey of Mekeel Christian Academy to the Section 2 Class D baseball championship game concluded on a Saturday afternoon.
Entering the bottom of the seventh inning, Mekeel Christian Academy, the fifth seed, was neck and neck with the second seed, Hadley-Luzerne, with a score of 4-4.
A walk with bases loaded by Noah Springer enabled Mason Dunn to score the decisive run on a walk-off walk, giving Hadley-Luzerne a narrow 5-4 victory at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.
“We managed to pull things together,” said Wil Bernacet, Mekeel’s head coach, reflecting on his team’s postseason journey. “I have three seniors who played a crucial role in getting us here. However, at the moment, we are all disappointed. The way the game ended was unfortunate.”
Mekeel made the first move by stealing a run in the top of the first inning. Daniel Hussey, despite being caught in a rundown between third and home, managed to beat the pickle to steal home, giving the Lions an early 1-0 lead.
Hadley-Luzerne responded in the bottom half with a two-run single by Taylor Smead.
Mekeel reclaimed the lead in the top of the third when Jeramiah Rodriguez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Jadin Zoeller followed with a bases-loaded walk, giving the Lions a 3-2 lead.
Hadley-Luzerne retaliated in the bottom of the third with Mason Conklin’s go-ahead, two-run inside-the-park home run.
The Lions didn’t back down, tying the game 4-4 in the top of the sixth, as Zoeller scored on a base hit from Cleighton Schaperjahn.
After a single and two Mekeel errors in the bottom of the seventh to load the bases, Springer’s walk sealed the game for the Eagles, securing the Class D title.
“That’s a reflection of our season,” Bernacet said. “We’ve been competitive in every game we’ve played. Our Achilles’ heel got the better of us again. We just couldn’t maintain our momentum for a full seven innings.”
The Lions made their way to the championship game by defeating fourth seed North Warren in the quarterfinals 7-1, and pulling off an upset against top seed Warrensburg in the semifinals 4-1.
“We leaned heavily on the young man who pitched tonight,” Bernacet said of Caleb Hussey. “He’s been our pillar all year.”
On Saturday, Hussey pitched for over six innings in the loss, allowing six hits and one earned run. He struck out 10 and walked three.
Last Saturday, Hussey pitched four shutout innings in the Lions’ victory over North Warren. On Monday against Warrensburg, he recorded 14 strikeouts in a complete game, one-run performance.
“Our run to play at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium sparked a wave of excitement throughout the school community,” Bernacet said. “It’s been a revitalizing experience.”
In Saturday’s championship game, Daniel Hussey went 2 for 4, while Shane Nygaard, Ethan Hadders and Josh Barnes all had base hits.
“We’ve been playing with 11 kids all season,” Bernacet said. “I’m amazed that everyone stayed healthy. We didn’t end the WAC well, I think we finished the regular season on a five-game losing streak, but we still managed to get here.
“Despite losing three seniors, I believe we have a strong enough core to continue building and make a comeback.”
