JACKSON, Wyoming — An unexpected mudslide on Friday morning has swallowed a significant section of the Teton Pass, leading to its immediate closure for all travelers until further notice.
The Wyoming Department of Transportation reported that Wyoming Highway 22 at the Teton Pass was shut down at 4:18 a.m. Friday following a mudslide at milepost 15, in the vicinity of the scale house. The mudslide was so severe that it blocked both travel lanes.
A Facebook update from the department revealed, “Our crews have been tirelessly working to clear the debris, but additional material continues to flow into the roadway.” The department also stated that there is currently no estimated time for the reopening of the pass.
Interestingly, the Teton Pass had already been closed on Thursday afternoon due to a large crack in the road caused by a landslide. This second closure is now being used as an opportunity by the crews to assess the temporary patch and movement at milepost 12.8.
According to officials, the movement resulted in a crack and drop in the road, leading to unsafe driving conditions on Thursday. Preliminary reports suggest that there has been additional movement in the crack since the repairs were carried out on Thursday.
The Wyoming Department of Transportation stated, “A more comprehensive investigation is underway, and more information will be available upon its completion.”
The department further added, “If our crews determine that the section of the roadway is unsafe for travel, the closure could potentially continue even after the cleanup of the mudslide at milepost 15.”
Agree – Mudslides are a serious issue that can cause a lot of damage and danger. It’s good that they shut down the pass to ensure everyone’s safety.
