NEW YORK (WKBW) — On Tuesday, Andrew Cuomo, the former Governor of New York, appeared before a congressional subcommittee to address queries regarding his management of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Asserting his innocence, Cuomo told the press, “The Department of Justice found no evidence of misconduct. An investigation explicitly stated that we adhered to the federal guidelines.” This was in response to the criticism he received for his handling of the pandemic, particularly in relation to nursing homes.
One of the major criticisms Cuomo faced was his directive for nursing homes to admit residents who were recovering from COVID-19 after being discharged from hospitals. This decision has been a point of contention and has been widely criticized.
During Tuesday’s hearing, Rep. Rich McCormick (R-GA) expressed his opinion that residents of nursing homes who had contracted COVID-19 should have been isolated to prevent further spread of the virus.
Rep. Raul Ruiz (D-CA) also voiced his concerns during the interview with Cuomo. He mentioned that they had several questions about testing procedures and the collaboration with the Federal Government during the pandemic.
Another issue that came up during the hearing was the discrepancy in the reported number of nursing home deaths. State Attorney General Letitia James stated in 2021 that the numbers were underestimated by approximately 50% as New York was only counting deaths that occurred within the facility and not those that happened in hospitals.
When questioned about this by reporters, Cuomo responded, “At one point, half of the deaths in the country were in nursing homes, making it a national tragedy.”
Disagree – He doesn’t deserve a platform after what he did.
