NEW YORK — On Friday, a U.S. bankruptcy judge granted permission to controversial figure Alex Jones to transition his bankruptcy case into a simple liquidation. The judge also stated that an independent trustee would be promptly assigned to supervise the sale of Jones’ remaining assets.
Judge Christopher Lopez, presiding over the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Houston, Texas, expressed that a Chapter 7 trustee should be established prior to settling the remaining disagreements between Jones and his creditors. These creditors include the families of 20 children and six staff members who tragically lost their lives in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.
Despite the pleas from the Sandy Hook families, who desired control over Jones’ social media accounts and the power to select the trustee responsible for gathering assets from Jones to cover some of the $1.5 billion in defamation judgments awarded to them by the courts, Lopez remained firm.
“The appropriate course of action is to appoint an interim trustee and allow that individual to commence their duties,” stated Lopez.
Lopez further explained that the families would have the opportunity to vote on a permanent trustee in 30 days. In the meantime, the interim trustee would have the authority to intervene in any disputes.
Lopez is also expected to make a decision later on Friday regarding the future of Jones’ company, Free Speech Systems. This company operates the Infowars website and hosts Jones’ radio show. Lopez is currently evaluating conflicting requests to either dismiss Free Speech Systems from bankruptcy or transition its bankruptcy into a liquidation.
Jones sought bankruptcy protection 17 months ago, but failed to negotiate a settlement that would decrease the $1.5 billion he owes to the Sandy Hook families. This is following rulings by courts in Connecticut and Texas that he defamed them with consistent false claims about the shooting.
For years, Jones propagated the theory that the Sandy Hook massacre was a staged event involving actors, as part of a government conspiracy to confiscate guns from Americans. Jones has since admitted that the shooting did indeed take place.
The judge presiding over Jones’ bankruptcy case has determined that the majority of the debt will persist following a liquidation, as it originated from “deliberate and harmful” behavior.
