SCHENECTADY — Nick Tellone, a Niskayuna High School alumnus, is proving to be a fast learner in the world of golf.
At just 22 years old, the St. John Fisher graduate is participating in his second Schenectady Classic. Despite his relative inexperience, he’s already making waves, having seized the lead in the opening round at Schenectady Municipal Golf Course.
Representing Mohawk Golf Club, Tellone shot a 3-under-par 69 on Friday, edging out fellow Mohawk Golf Club member Tom McGinn by a single stroke in a tightly contested leaderboard.
In the Schenectady Women’s Classic, reigning champion Karen Feldman took an early lead with a 1-under-par 71, putting her four shots ahead of Schalmont High School’s Dannah Smith and Kim Skiba, a senior club champion at The Edison Club. The Women’s Classic concludes on Saturday, while the men’s tournament continues with a full field Saturday before narrowing down to the top 20 and ties for Sunday’s final round.
“I’m pleased with my performance,” Tellone commented. “I struck the ball well and managed to sink some putts.”
Tellone scored birdies on the first, ninth, 12th, 14th, 16th and 17th holes. However, he bogeyed the 11th hole after blocking his tee shot to the right, and also bogeyed the par-3 15th hole.
Standing at 6-foot-6, Tellone is part of a new generation of young golfers making their mark in local tournaments. He is a former Empire 8 Player of the Year and a first-team all-conference selection in college, following a successful career at Niskayuna and on the NENY PGA Junior Tour.
McGinn, a former Tri-County Match Play champion, scored five birdies during his 2-under-par round, but suffered a double bogey on the par-5 14th hole.
“I had a solid game today,” he said. “I don’t have many complaints, except for when I hit my ball out of bounds on the 14th hole.”
Former Schenectady Classic champion Dan Russo of Schuyler Meadows and Niskayuna graduate Jimmy King both shot 71, with Russo recording four birdies.
“I was already tired after about two hours,” said Russo, the Capital Region’s all-time leader in major tournament victories, who was making his tournament debut this season after recovering from double pneumonia. “I got lucky with a lot of stuff today.”
King had a roller-coaster round with six birdies, a double bogey and three other bogeys.
“I felt like I played pretty well when I made my birdies, but I made too many bogeys. My short game was not working that well today,” he said.
Defending and four-time champion Ben Bates and Griff Hunter each shot even-par 72.
“I was missing it in the wrong spots today,” said Bates, a former NYS Junior Boys titlist who was also a standout at Skidmore College. “I only had two birdies, on Nos. 2 and 9. I didn’t play that well on the last 6-7 holes, including a three-putt bogey on 18.
Hunter’s excellent round could have been better if not for a triple-bogey on the par-5 14th hole.
“I pulled my tee shot into the trees and then hit a provisional tee shot,” he explained. “I ended up finding my first ball just a few feet from my provisional. But I had to take an unplayable. Then I whiffed when I tried to hit the shot left-handed, because it looked like my best choice.”
Hunter, who has a couple of top-five finishes in this event, eagled the second hole and added birdies on the ninth and 16th holes.
“I’m happy for sure. I played pretty consistently except for that one triple bogey,” he said.
Eight-time former champion Jim Mueller, former Troy Invitational titlist and several time Schenectady Classic runner-up Lance Hope, Eric Dutcher, Kevin McGinn and former CRAGA Stroke Play and Tri-County Match Play winner Chad Stoffer each carded a 73.
Feldman, a former NEWGA champion who has multiple NYS Senior Women’s Amateur titles, was 1-over-par on the front, but she clicked into another gear on the back nine.
“I’m more than happy with my round,” she said. “I had three birdies and a lot of pars. They say there are horses for courses, and that is definitely the case for me as I love to play here at Schenectady Muni. I saw the lines with my putter very well.”
Smith, who finished third in the recent NYSPHSAA Girls Championship at The Edison Club, was also satisfied with her round.
“My driver was on point, but I missed a lot of putts. Still, I only had one three-putt,” she said. “I hit my irons and my wedges pretty well.”
