Biden Confuses Harris and Trump, Affirms His Continuation in Presidential Run

WASHINGTON — In⁢ a surprising turn of events, President Joe ‍Biden mistakenly referred‍ to Vice President Kamala Harris as his Republican adversary Donald Trump during a press conference on Thursday. Despite this, he ⁢affirmed his commitment to‌ his reelection ‍campaign, even as an increasing number of his Democratic colleagues called for him to step down.

At ⁤81, Biden ‌is the oldest person to have ever held the office of the U.S. ⁢president. He used his extensive international experience to argue that he is the best candidate to defeat 78-year-old former President Trump and lead the country for another term.

“Age ‍brings a touch of wisdom‌ if you’re ⁤willing to learn,” Biden stated, emphasizing his years of experience.

However, his recent performance against Trump ‍in a presidential⁤ debate has raised concerns ‍among donors, supporters, and‌ fellow ⁢Democrats about his ability to win the upcoming Nov. 5 election and handle the pressures of the presidency.

His confusion between⁤ his‍ vice president ⁢and his Republican opponent at the beginning of‍ the press conference, which⁤ lasted⁤ almost an hour, likely did not help his cause.

“Let’s ⁣be clear, I wouldn’t have chosen Vice President Trump as my vice president if she wasn’t capable of being president. So,‌ let’s start there,” Biden said, responding to a question from Reuters about his confidence in Harris.

Throughout the press conference, the president coughed frequently and ⁢occasionally stumbled over his words.⁣ However, he also provided detailed responses on topics such⁣ as the Israel-Gaza conflict and the need for Western countries to increase their military arsenal to counter threats from Russia and China.

Earlier in the day, Biden had ‌mistakenly referred to ‍Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as “President Putin”⁢ at the NATO summit in Washington,⁤ causing ‍a stir among the attendees.

His campaign has ⁢been‍ struggling for the past two weeks, following⁤ his⁤ poor ⁣debate performance against ‍Trump.

Public appeals for Biden to withdraw from the race have been made by at least 16 of the 213 Democrats in⁣ the House and one of the Senate’s 51 Democrats.

Connecticut’s Rep. Jim Himes joined the group calling for⁤ Biden’s withdrawal shortly after ⁣the press conference concluded.

“We need‍ to present the strongest possible candidate to counter the threat of Trump’s ‍promised MAGA authoritarianism,” he stated. “I no longer believe that candidate is Joe ‍Biden.”

Biden, who⁣ overcame a childhood stutter, has ‍a history ⁤of misspeaking and getting names wrong ⁢throughout his ‍political career.

He assured that his health is in good condition and that he would undergo another neurological exam to assess his ⁤mental sharpness if‌ his doctors advised it.

Missteps

A White House official, who wished to remain anonymous, told Reuters⁣ that they were unsure whether the press ⁣conference would bolster support on Capitol Hill.

While Biden donor John Morgan praised his performance as “fantastic,” another donor,⁣ who⁢ also ⁤wished to remain anonymous, expressed doubts about its effectiveness, given the increased scrutiny of Biden’s verbal ⁤gaffes.

Biden admitted that ⁣he needed⁤ to “pace myself” more⁤ and complained about being overscheduled ‌by his aides. “I’m catching hell from my wife,” he confessed.

The press conference allowed Biden to highlight his achievements on the international stage at the ⁤end of the NATO summit in Washington, where members pledged their support to Ukraine in its fight against⁢ the invasion launched by Russian President Vladimir Putin in ⁣February 2022.

Biden argued that⁢ Trump would weaken NATO and increase prices for U.S. consumers by imposing steep tariffs ⁢on imported goods.

He took credit for bringing Sweden and Finland into‍ the‍ alliance⁤ and claimed to have united 50 nations in support of Ukraine.

He also called for an immediate end to the ‌Israel-Gaza war and⁢ insisted that Israel should not occupy the⁣ enclave after the war. ⁢He ⁤added⁢ that both Israel and Hamas had agreed to his cease-fire‍ framework, but there were still gaps to be bridged.

On Thursday, officials from the United Auto Workers union met to discuss ⁣their‍ concerns about his‍ candidacy, according to three ⁤sources⁣ familiar ‍with the matter. ⁢The union, which has a significant presence ‌in industrial states like Michigan that Biden needs to win for⁣ reelection, had endorsed him in January.

No Democratic leaders in‍ Congress have called for Biden ⁢to end his candidacy,⁤ although former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ‍declined to comment on whether⁢ he should continue⁢ his campaign on Wednesday.

The campaign ⁣has commissioned a survey to ⁤assess how Vice President Kamala Harris would perform if she were to replace Biden as the candidate, according to a ⁢source with knowledge of the⁢ matter. A Reuters/Ipsos poll last week found ‌that Harris would fare no better than Biden in a matchup with Trump.

Prominent donors, including actor George Clooney, have⁣ urged Biden to withdraw, and ⁣there are indications that concerns are growing within⁢ Biden’s campaign team as well.

The New York Times reported that some longtime advisers were contemplating⁤ ways to persuade him to abandon his‍ reelection bid, while NBC⁢ News reported that some campaign staffers ‍believed he had no chance of winning the election.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll found Biden and Trump tied at 40% each. Other opinion polls have⁣ shown Trump leading Biden, and some strategists have warned that Trump could potentially win traditionally Democratic states like New Hampshire and Minnesota.

In a ⁢strategy memo, the campaign argued that it has always expected a close election and could win by focusing on three battleground⁢ states: Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

If he won those states, along‍ with others considered to be reliably Democratic, he ⁤would secure 270 electoral votes — the bare ⁢minimum needed to‍ win the presidency. ‌Biden won 306 electoral⁤ votes‌ in 2020.

The campaign described other⁢ battleground states he won in 2020 as “not out of reach.”
