JERUSALEM — In a recent statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed uncertainty over the fate of Hamas military leader Mohammed Deif and another high-ranking official following an Israeli attack in Gaza on Saturday. Regardless of the outcome, he pledged to continue Israel’s military objectives to their conclusion.
“Our goal remains the same - to reach every single leader of Hamas,” he declared during a televised press briefing. He further stated that intensifying military pressure on Hamas would enhance the prospects of securing the release of Israeli hostages.
The press briefing was convened after the Israeli military announced that it had executed a strike, guided by accurate intelligence, aimed at Deif and Rafa Salama, a senior Hamas commander, in the city of Khan Younis.
According to Palestinian health authorities, the strike resulted in the death of approximately 90 Palestinians and injured up to 300 in the designated humanitarian area of Al Mawasi. This incident marks the most significant loss of life in recent weeks.
The Israeli military confirmed that the strike targeted a military compound, but could not verify the number of casualties.
Addressing a crowd of protestors in Tel Aviv demanding more efforts to retrieve Israeli and foreign hostages from Gaza, Netanyahu asserted that exerting military pressure on Hamas was the most effective strategy to negotiate the return of hostages taken by Hamas militants during the attack on October 7.
He remained firm on Israel’s fundamental demands for a deal. “I have not deviated an inch from the framework that President Biden proposed,” he stated. “And I will not allow Hamas to deviate an inch either.”
