Speeding Ahead: Varin Secures Two ESS Wins

For Danny Varin, the Empire Super Sprints’ (ESS) visit to Albany-Saratoga and Fonda speedways proved to be fruitful.

Friday, Varin started fifth in the A-main, passed Jordan Poirier for the lead at the midway point and rode the high-line to his ESS victory at Albany-Saratoga.

Saturday, Varin returned to Fonda Speedway, started fourth in the Earl Halaquist Memorial A-main before getting to the front and pulling away for his eighth win in the last nine ESS events at Fonda Speedway.

Varin’s victories were among several memorial features run at the local tracks over the weekend.

The racing started Thursday at Utica-Rome Speedway with the Short Track Super Series 61-lap, $6,100-to-win “Richie Evans Remembered 61.”

Matt Sheppard continued his success in the event, winning for the third straight year with Stewart Friesen, Jimmy Phelps, Mat Williamson and Mike Mahaney completing the top five.

Sheppard fired from the third starting spot and took the lead from Mike Mahaney on lap eight and maintained the lead to record his eighth win of the season at Utica-Rome.

“We got out front and I didn’t know where the fast lane was,” Sheppard said. “I didn’t feel spectacular anywhere, so I just tried to move and keep the guys behind me guessing.”

Brian Calabrese picked up his second straight Sportsman feature win at Utica-Rome over Matt Janczuk, Payton Talbot, Tyler Peet and Zack Sobotka.

Andrew MacFadden led from green-to-checkers to win the added Limited Sportsman main event.

Saturday, one of the biggest and most popular events of the season for the Pro Stock Division – the Hondo Classic and Bobco Dash – took to the track at Fonda Speedway.

A large turnout of 29 cars was on hand for the 19th annual event honoring the late Pro Stock driver Hondo Carpenter.

Luke Horning held off Kenny Gates and Beau Ballard to win his second Hondo Classic, while AJ Walters topped the field in the Bobco Dash honoring the late longtime track videographer Bob “Bobco” James.

Stewart Friesen rode the high side of the speedway to register his fifth win of the season and 93rd of his career at Fonda in the caution-free, 30-lap modified feature, while Tyler Peet and Bobby Rhinehardt picked up their first career victories at the Track of Champions in the 602 Crate Sportsman and Limited Sportsman main events.

After totaling his car last week, Ken Hollenbeck returned to Fonda with a new car and got by Jay Ingersoll on a restart to win the overall 4-cylinder and SOHC features. Ingersoll finished second and was declared the DOHC winner.

Also Saturday, the Sportsman Modifieds competed in the 38-lap Vince Quenneville Sr. Memorial at Devil’s Bowl Speedway.

Justin Comes came home the winner in the 29-car field with Josh Masterson, Tanner Siemons, Brent Warren and Joey Scarborough rounding out the top five.

At Lebanon Valley Speedway, Tim Hartman Jr, survived an opening-lap mishap to charge back through the field and record his 10th straight 602 Sportsman feature win to remain undefeated on the season.

Following the victory, Hartman’s No. 22H was impounded.

In a Facebook post, Hartman said, “Able to grab our 10th win of the year at Lebanon even after tearing up the car on lap 1! The car has been loaded up on a flatbed and is being impounded so that a full teardown can be performed this week. Looking forward to proving that the reason for our success is that we have a great team!”

Brett Haas picked up the evening’s Big-Block Modified win, while Andy Bachetti scored the Small-Block feature win.

Shawn Perez took home the Pro Stock victory, while Owen Lewis won the Limited Sportsman feature and David Streibel topped the Super Street Stock field.

Friday night at Albany-Saratoga Speedway, Jack Lehner powered his way from his 16th starting spot on a slick track to claim his third 35-lap Modified feature win of the season over Peter Britten and Marc Johnson.

Dan Grignon came away with his first win of the season in the 25-lap sportsman feature, while Jason Casey picked up his second Pro Stock feature win of the season, and Chase Zimmer won the 20-lap limited sportsman feature. Josh Hemming held off a late challenge from Chris Stalker to record his first win of the year in the 20-lap street stock feature.
