NEW YORK, N.Y. (WKBW) — The doors of opportunity are now wide open for those who aspire to serve and protect as State Troopers. The State Police Entrance Exams are currently accepting applications.
This recruitment drive is fueled by a substantial $66 million investment aimed at expanding the Police Academy classes. The ultimate objective is to bolster the number of state troopers on the front lines, tackling significant crime issues such as gun trafficking.
If you’re considering a career in law enforcement, here’s what you need to know:
- The initial salary for Police Academy recruits is a competitive $59,612.
- After just one year of service, the minimum compensation increases to an impressive $98,300.
- Additionally, a comprehensive health benefits package and retirement plan are part of the deal.
Before you apply, ensure you meet the following criteria:
- You must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Your age should be between 20 and 34 years. However, if you have full-time active duty military experience, the maximum age limit can be extended by a year for each year of service, up to 7 years.
- You should possess a high school diploma or its equivalent.
- A minimum of 60 college credits is required, or 30 credits if you have undergone police training or have been discharged from the military after two years of active service.
In a bid to attract more applicants, the State Police relaxed their tattoo restrictions and increased the maximum age limit just last year.
According to WHNY News last October, the force has been grappling with staff shortages since the onset of the pandemic. While they lose approximately 300 troopers statewide due to retirements and other factors, they manage to onboard about 400 new recruits.
At the current rate, they estimate it would take more than a decade to bounce back from the pandemic’s impact, which is why these changes were implemented.
The application fee for the exam is $20, and there’s an additional $44 fee for the testing software.
Ready to take the leap? You can sign up here.
Testing commences on August 15th. Don’t miss this chance to embark on a rewarding career in law enforcement.
