ALBANY — Eileen King, a promising future lawyer, has chosen to extend her college field hockey journey at UAlbany, before stepping ‌into the legal world.

King,⁢ a⁤ 2020 alumna of Niskayuna High School, has a ⁣rich history with field hockey, having played for the Silver Warriors and the ADK Field Hockey club team in her ⁣youth.

During her time with⁤ the ADK ‌program, she first crossed paths with UAlbany field hockey coach Phil ‌Sykes. Despite Sykes’ efforts to recruit her for the Great Danes during her college commitment period, King‍ initially chose a different‌ path.

Now, as a graduate student, King has ‍made the decision‌ to transfer to UAlbany, reuniting with her former coach.

“My parents initially wanted me to experience college⁤ life away from home,” King, who spent two full‌ seasons at Vermont, explained. “Now that I’ve matured, they’re ⁣comfortable with me returning home.”

“Both Eileen‍ and her sister played for our club team when they were young,” Sykes reminisced. “It’s‍ been a‌ joy to watch them evolve as‌ players ‍and individuals.”

King embarked on her college career amidst the 2020 pandemic. In 2023, she took a ⁣break from playing at Vermont due to academic commitments. With two years of NCAA eligibility left, King ⁤was on the⁤ verge of retiring from the sport, until Sykes intervened.

“I had taken my LSAT last⁤ summer and was considering applying to ‍law school this summer. But then Phil reached out to⁣ me, as‍ I was in ‍the transfer portal,” King shared. “So, I decided to enhance my resume with a master’s degree and ‍postpone my law school plans.”

Had King chosen to ⁤attend law school this year, she would⁢ have had to give up field hockey. Instead, she decided ‌to pursue a master’s⁤ degree in political science at UAlbany, while continuing to play the sport she loves.

“The pandemic made me realize that there’s no need to rush life. I don’t‌ have to achieve everything by a certain age,” King reflected. “I rediscovered my passion for the ⁢game, the camaraderie of being part of a team, and the unique playing style here.”

“We had the chance to watch her ‍progress every year at Vermont, another⁤ America East school,” Sykes said. “When the opportunity arose to bring her back here, I was ⁣thrilled.”

King is now part ‌of a highly competitive UAlbany team, which consistently sets high goals ‌for the America East and NCAA tournaments.

“The ⁤team is filled with talented players and exceptional coaches,” King said. “Everyone here is fiercely ⁤competitive and driven⁢ to win. It’s invigorating to be part of ⁤such a dynamic environment, where everyone is working towards a common goal.”

“Eileen’s kind and generous nature made her transition into‌ our team seamless,” Sykes said. “She quickly fit ⁢in with the rest of ⁣the team during the ⁢summer, even ⁣though ⁣most of the bonding happened over social media.”

As the ‌Great Danes kick off their practice sessions, King is adjusting to her new teammates ⁤and experiencing Sykes as a college coach, a shift from their ‌earlier player-coach relationship.

“Phil’s coaching style hasn’t changed much. He’s ⁢still pretty⁢ laid-back. The ‍only difference is perhaps a more mature language,” King said, recalling her early days with Sykes.

“He used to challenge me ‌by making me throw aerials over him, which was‍ a bit⁤ nerve-wracking,” she added, laughing.

“Eileen was a standout player at Niskayuna and was instrumental in their‍ success,” Sykes remembered.⁣ “In ‍our club team, she was always eager to‍ learn and improve, regardless of the level of competition.”

UAlbany recently launched its season with a scrimmage‌ against UMass Lowell. The team was⁣ ranked ⁢first in⁤ this year’s preseason America East coach’s poll.

“There are always⁤ ups and ⁢downs‍ in this journey, but today’s performance had so ⁤many positives⁢ that I believe ⁤we’re off to ⁣a great start,” ‍Sykes said about the scrimmage. “With ⁢12 experienced seniors who have ⁤tasted success, I believe our potential is ⁤immense. I can’t wait to see how far we ⁣can go.”
