CHICAGO — As the Midwest and the eastern half of the United States brace for temperatures soaring into the 90s and even crossing the 100-degree mark, officials are urging the public to take necessary measures to ensure their safety.
Heatwaves are not to be taken lightly. A study analyzing heat-related fatalities in the U.S. over the past quarter-century, published in JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association, highlights this. The research indicates a steady rise in such deaths, particularly in the past seven years.
The study reported that in the previous year alone, heat-related causes claimed 2,325 lives, a figure that could potentially be an underestimation.
Chicago is predicted to be the epicenter of this heatwave, with the high temperatures spreading southwards and then up the Eastern coast. Southern California, along with parts of Arizona and New Mexico, are also expected to experience scorching temperatures in the coming days. While most areas will see temperatures in the 90s, some places are bracing for 100- to 108-degree days. Phoenix is forecasted to reach a blistering 110 degrees by Tuesday. Other factors, such as humidity, can make it feel even hotter.
The National Weather Service has issued an “extreme” heat risk warning for Chicago, Des Moines in Iowa, and the Twin Cities area. Simultaneously, a dozen states are preparing for “major” heat, where the combination of heat and humidity could push temperatures to between 105 and 115 degrees.
“Forecast highs in the mid-90s to near 100 combined with high humidity will send heat indices into the 105-115 degree range, with widespread heat-related advisories and warnings in place,” the National Weather Service stated in an urgent weather message. The Weather Prediction Center, in a post on X, noted that “records may be broken.”
By Saturday, the risk is expected to reduce to low to moderate for most parts of the country, according to a National Weather Service map.
However, even moderately high temperatures can pose a risk if people overexert themselves outdoors or become dehydrated. For those without adequate air conditioning or a cooler place to retreat to, the heat can be extremely uncomfortable, if not dangerous.
Managing the Heatwave
In the heat-related deaths study, the researchers from the University of Texas at San Antonio recommended that “local authorities in high-risk areas should consider investing in the expansion of access to hydration centers and public cooling centers or other buildings with air conditioning.”
Individuals also need to take precautions, such as drinking plenty of fluids even if they don’t feel particularly thirsty. This is especially important for older individuals and young children, who may not feel the urge to hydrate.
WNDU-TV in South Bend, Indiana, in its weather report, advised ensuring that ”pets are off the pavement by late morning into the early evening hours. This is also a reminder to never leave pets and children alone in a vehicle,” the station warned.
The National Weather Service also highlighted the danger of heat that “persists for more than one day.” Our bodies need time to cool down, so consecutive hot days and nights that don’t cool down enough can be a dangerous combination.
Urban “heat islands” are another concern. These are areas in cities with a high concentration of concrete and impermeable surfaces that absorb heat during the day and radiate it at night, keeping temperatures high. One solution is to plant more trees, which provide shade and can reduce the temperature by as much as 20 degrees. However, trees in these heat islands can also be stressed by the heat.
Having air conditioning on a hot day can significantly reduce the risk. However, those without it may need to find a cooler place to be.
In addition to staying indoors when it’s too hot, drinking plenty of fluids, and avoiding strenuous activities, you can also help your community by checking on others when temperatures soar.
