WASHINGTON — The United States welcomed Britain’s King Charles and Queen Camilla on Monday as they began their four-day visit. Despite the ongoing tensions between the U.S. and the UK over the Iran conflict, President Donald Trump, a self-proclaimed royal enthusiast, warmly received the royal couple.
This state visit, the most significant and impactful of Charles’ reign, commemorates the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence from British rule. It is the first visit to the U.S. by a British monarch in twenty years.
Upon their arrival at Joint Base Andrews, the royal couple was greeted with a brief ceremony. They then proceeded to the White House, where they were warmly welcomed by President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. After a brief photo session, they retreated inside for a private tea.
Later, the king and queen attended a garden party at the British ambassador’s newly refurbished residence, where a choir performed the British and American national anthems.
Among the attendees were media moguls, Washington’s elite, and officials such as Sen. Ted Cruz, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and ambassadors from various countries.
The royal couple’s itinerary for the week includes a Tuesday address to Congress, a grand state dinner at the White House, and a Wednesday visit to New York City. These events are taking place amidst the heightened security in the capital following the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner shooting on Saturday.
A palace source revealed that the king’s speech to Congress would last approximately 20 minutes. Although the speech was prepared with the advice of the British government, much of the language and tone were influenced by King Charles himself.
In his speech, the king will acknowledge the occasional disagreements between the UK and the U.S. over the past 250 years. However, he will emphasize that the two nations have always managed to unite, defending their shared democratic values to ensure global security and prosperity.
King Charles will describe the UK-U.S. partnership as “one of the greatest alliances in human history.”
Disagreements over Iran
Despite President Trump’s admiration for the British royal family and his frequent praise of King Charles as a “great man,” he has had disagreements with the British government led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Prime Minister Starmer hopes that this visit will strengthen the “special relationship” between the two allies, which is currently at its lowest point since the Suez Crisis in 1956.
The long-planned visit has been overshadowed by a political dispute between the two nations over the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran. This led to President Trump expressing his deep dissatisfaction with the British government for not supporting the offensive.
Following their visit to Washington, the royal couple will travel to New York City to pay tribute to the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks ahead of the 25th anniversary.
The visit concludes in Virginia, where the king will meet with conservationists, acknowledging his long-standing commitment to environmental activism.
Although President Trump has recently softened his criticism of Britain over its response to the Iran conflict, an internal Pentagon email suggested that the U.S. might reconsider its stance on Britain’s claim to the Falkland Islands as a punitive measure for its lack of support, further straining the relationship.
One topic King Charles will likely avoid during his visit is the Jeffrey Epstein scandal. His brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, is currently under police investigation due to his connections with the late U.S. sex offender. The former Prince Andrew has denied any wrongdoing.

Disagree – The conflict in Iran should not overshadow the importance of King Charles’ visit to the US.
Agree – King Charles’ visit can help foster positive international relations despite tensions elsewhere.
